I've been circling the DVD set for Ripper Street - has anybody seen it? Is it any good? And how would it do for steampunk inspiration? I know that it isn't steampunk, but looking at the box it seems to have some of the flavor, and is set during the proper time period (1889 or so). Finally, how well would it work to give players a feel for the time period? The Auld Grump |

Ripper Street was one of the best series I have seen in a long time. So, to answer your questions, Auld Grump, is it any good? Absolutely! Even though I am not a fan of the genre, the series caught my interest from the start and never let go. How would it do for steampunk inspiration? Fair to middling, although a few episodes did centre around the technology of the time. The building of the London Underground and one about ship design spring readily to mind. As you rightly said, the show isn't steampunk but those two episodes could support steampunk inventions in place of real life technology. Finally, how well would it work to give players a feel for the time period? I'd have to say it would work very well. The producers, writers and set designers have captured the feel of the period very well. London in 1889 was a very dark and brutal place to live. Ripper Street is a TV series that I would highly recommend to anyone even remotely interested in this historical period. I was delighted to read that a second series has already been commissioned after the success of series one. |

Excellent. Adding this to my list of DVDs to get. For me technology in steampunk is secondary to the sociological aspects - mores, and attitudes. Plotline wise I prefer a mystery - there may be technology at its heart (Jules Verne pretty much invented the techno thriller....) but the resolution is going to be handled by human beings (or elves, dwarfs, awakened Bullgines, or...) How theft worthy are the plot elements? For the record - 1889 was not a good time for the London constabulary. The year before had seen them fail at two very big cases, that of Jack the Ripper and that of the Torso murder (where the torso of the body was dumped into the newly dug foundation of New Scotland Yard....) And Whitechapel remained a pustular trap for the poor. The Auld Grump |

You asked how theft worthy are the plot elements? The short answer is that they are very theft worthy. Despite its name, Jack the Ripper is rarely mentioned, although in episode one and episode eight (the last of this series) it appears he may have returned. Having said that, there is no denying that the Ripper casts a huge shadow over the whole series. Your desire for the sociological aspects of the time will be well catered for. The class war is in full swing here. I am confident that you will not be disappointed by the series when you do get round to watching it. |

Not that it's likely to happen anytime in the near future, but I'd love to run in a steampunk campaign using GDW's old Space:1889 base rules. |
