Any of you hear about the new Pathfinder Card Game from Paizo? http://paizo.com/pathfinder/adventureCardGame The starter set costs $60 and includes 500 cards. They're planning on doing bi-monthly expansions that cost $20 each. It sounds like it's basically a way to play D&D without a DM. I have to admit I'm a bit skeptical about this. I wish them well, but I think it kinda defeats the purpose of getting a group of folks together to play D&D with a DM and all that. With how popular Pathfinder Society Organized Play is becoming, I don't know if it'll find enough of a market, either. I mean, here in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Pathfinder Society is holding 20 organized events in March alone. And most of those have 3-4 tables running at the same time. I would think that is the ideal audience for a card game like this--folks who don't have a regular home game or who don't have a DM available. |

I think that is aimed at being a quick pick up and play game - not to replace the real games, but for beer and pretzels with your mates. Sort of the same niche as Warhammer Quest. The Auld Grump |

I have it. I've only managed to play a solo game with it thus far. And that wasn't all that interesting or fun, to be honest. I found the process of playing it to not feel very rewarding. It's not like you seem to gain loot or power through the course of playing a session. You gain something when you finish a session, sort of like a level up. Honestly, I find the process of playing something like the Order of the Stick card game to be much more fun--even if you ignore all the silliness built into that game. You just gain more stuff as you play and get the feeling of progressing your character more versus the Pathfinder card game. That's just my take, though. One of the guys in my home game has it, too, and has played it a few times and he likes it, though. He strongly cautions that you've got to expect it to be a card game, not a replacement for playing the Pathfinder RPG. Word that I've heard from local game stores and online is that it's been well received. It has climbed to the 49th highest rated game on boardgamegeek.com, too. That doesn't mean it appeals to everyone 'cuz there's quite a mix of games that get highly rated on there, but that DOES indicate that a lot of people like the game. |

The only real negative that I have heard (repeatedly) is that solo play is not much fun - it is intended for multiple players, with interaction between the players. I have heard it described as a more serious, cooperative, Munchkin, by somebody that really likes Munchkin. The Auld Grump |

Someone did a comparison of our card game to it (because we're both solo games) on board game geek. If you're interested in the solo play there is information you can gleen from it there. |

I have played two games with it. With 3 and 4 players. The game is fun, and the better way to play it is in campaign mode. Still, as already said, it´s not a replacement for roleplaying, it´s just another regular table top game with a Pathfinder theme. |
