An MMO, even one based on a game that I very much like, is not my cuppa. But, that said, there are some interesting directions that they are taking this:

Most Quests are individual - Barbarian Bob and Rodney Ranger do not, for the most part, get the same quests.

Things that are done stay done. If Barbarian Bob finishes a quest then that quest has been finished - Rodney Ranger does not get to go and do that same quest, no matter how many times he talks to Mr. Exclamation Point.

So if Rodney wants a bit part in Barbarian Bob's Adventures in MMO Land then he has to play with Bob. And ditto for Bob to take a supporting role in Rodney's Epic Saga he has to adventure with Rodney - those quests will be gone when Rodney and Bob finish them.

PCs can found their own towns. Build their own fortifications, draft their own armies, and make war on their own friends and neighbors.

An important detail - Pathfinder Online is already funded - it will happen regardless of the success or failure of this Kickstarter. This will allow it to be released sooner and/or better than it would without the extra funds.

They are looking for $1,000,000 in additional funding.

I will be watching this one closely. Honestly, my first impression is that it sounds great, but I am hopeful the graphics engine sees a complete overhaul.

I will prolly toss in a couple bucks. I don't have time to play MMO's a lot, and unless this is a "buy up front and play free", I'll never play it. BUT, I'd love to see it get off the ground. Whether it can survive is another story.

MMOs are not really my thing either, but this looks interesting. I do like this format although I am in the same boat as tatteredking, if it is subscription-based, then it is definitely not for me. I would pay more up front for a game like this that is unlimited play, but I do not play enough to warrant paying monthly.

This is a kickstarter that interests me, but whether I have the funds for it or not...

They have some really interesting ideas, and I like playing MMOs so I'll see where it goes.

Interested . . . Interested . . . Oh darn, its solidly PvP

As an irregular gamer, the idea of being PvP fodder every time I come back a bit rusty after a break just doesn't appeal. Personal taste, but I prefer gaming against a challenging environment.

It seems like the point of open PvP in this will be much like Ultima Online where their were no artificial barriers to doing what you want. Wanna be an assassin? Go for it, but prepare to be hunted by other players. Want to jump the crafters outside of town? They will start hiring body guards. Mad at an opposing guild and want to start a war? It made for a very fluid world.

It wasn't as bad as you would think in UO. There were enough anti-Player Killers to balance things out pretty well. Also, their were NPC guards near towns, so unskilled characters could easily just hang out there until they improved.

I would disagree. The PvP aspect of UO is what completely turned me off to that game. I wanted to play the game and craft stuff not pay the "mafia" to let me go out and back to town.

After a couple weeks of frustration, (high skill jerks who just terrorized me if I went out of town) I gave up on the game as not fun and haven't really given another MMO a chance since.

When did you play? I know things definitely started to go downhill as it became more popular. I played shortly before the first expansion.

Kicktraq's trends seems to be currently expecting this to fall short.

I have no interest in the MMORPG, but I may pledge for the dungeon book. (Mostly curiosity - I don't think that I have ever seen any dungeons written by Lisa Stevens before....)

This project confuses me a little, I must say. Pathfinder as an RPG seems to attract fans that wouldn't have much interest in a PvP-heavy game. Yet Ryan D'Ancy spent several years (after he left WotC) working for CCP, which makes EVE Online--the most PvP oriented MMO around. I wish them the best of luck, but I have a little trouble supporting something that I'm not that likely to play and that doesn't even use the Pathfinder system.

I gather that there are some legal problems with using the OGL for a MORPG - mostly in displaying the licenses.

The problem that I have is not having any interest in the MMORPG. (Any MORPG.)

I might pledge to get some of the figures, and the PDF of the dungeon. But none of the pledge levels that have what I want do not have the MORPG - I wonder, can I give that part to one of my players?

Ah well - my Roommie has pledged over $100.

I think they're making up their own system 'cuz they don't see PFRPG or any version of D&D as a good candidates for an MMO. And that's mostly because MMOs are intentionally designed to keep you playing for months and months before you get to max level. DDO has taken the 3.5 system and made an MMO and been fairly successful, but they had to break up each actual character level into 4 sub levels so people feel like they're making progress, but actually aren't really leveling that fast. I think Dancy saw the success that EVE Online has had and wanted to duplicate that with fantasy--and that means a level-less skill system.

Just 'cuz it has the Pathfinder name attached to it, isn't enough of a reason to get me to support it. I've sunk way too much money into my gaming this year, as it is. And I've stumbled across something else online this weekend that's going to get me to spend a bunch more money before the end of the year, I suspect.

Paizo's community is very strong, and that includes friends at many excellent third-party publishers that make roleplaying products for use with the Pathfinder RPG. Paizo reached out to those publishers and asked them if they would be willing to donate a PDF or two (or sometimes even more) that we could bundle up and offer as part of the Crowdforger Kickstarter backers, and the response has been absolutely amazing—including Paizo's own contribution, it currently includes 42 products from 29 different publishers, with a total retail value of $230! Good value, but ... but how desperate is that move? Yeesh.

I gather that it is not so much desperate as late - the original plan was to have those up for or before Christmas... But herding gamers, even those that own small press publishing companies, is like herding cats. So, some put up one, some put up several, and some said 'That's a great idea! I'll get back to ya on that!' Then took weeks to get back in touch....

I do think that it is there mostly for the folks that want to support the MORPG, but don't want to play the MORPG....

I have no interest in the MORPG, and I already have a lot of those PDFs....

Its desperation. Thats the kind of thing you offer _after_ you've hit your funding, as additional rewards. Doing it before you've hit it (they're what, halfway there?) shows the desperation they must be feeling.

As I may have mentioned, once or twice, I do not think that these incentives are being aimed at folks that play MORPGs.

They are being aimed at folks that don't play MORPGs, but want something for supporting Pathfinder.

The Paizo forums have threads about that dating bacstarter.

The PDF incentive was supposed to be up for Christmas, but failed to get squared away in time.

I think that Goblin Works would have been better served having the non-MORPG incentives earlier, and going for a lower initial investment.

As it is... I think that it will make its minimum, but not much over.

If they had aimed at $500,000 and had incremental incentives then I think that they might be well over $1,5000,000 by now.

And, like so many gaming Kickstarters, they are being compared to the Reaper Bones KS and coming up short.

But then Bones was one of my two favorite Kickstarters - with the other being Kings of War. (The Bones Kickstarter was very well run. The KoW Kickstarter, on the other hand, was hilariously funny to watch, as the folks running it went into a panic when their top goal was left in the dust of the first few days. After that they just kept throwing stuff up, laughing and crying as the total just kept climbing on them.* )
