Those that have been here over the years know what time of year it is.... MorganM's insane birthday set production! Wifey and I are in full swing for all three kids' birthdays. One is already done and over; it was a Barbie theme. This was likely the least amount of work we've ever done so far... but we are doubling down on my son's Mario Party plus baby's first b-day! Cleaned it up, used the robo-cutter to make some silhouettes, and mounted to the window... genius! Wifey makes another amazing cake! She also did her first cake pops (on the left). They tasted AMAZING! Cupcakes have Ring Pops in them. Finally the premiere craft for this party.... Life size Barbie box! Three huge pieces of cardboard made to look like a Barbie box. The plastic is that stuff you put on your windows in the winter and use a hair dryer to make it taunt. White sheet as a backdrop. Several 100watt full spectrum CFL lights inside. It's tricky to take a pic without bad glare on the plastic. Ideally you would want a ton of diffused light on the front of the box and turn off your flash but with 30 people running around it wasn't safe to have all that lighting and cables in the room. The trick was to be at an extreme angle with your camera so the glare pointed away from the camera. Here's wifey in a terrible blonde wig from the dress up clothes! LOL Striking her best Barbie poses! Grandma Wifey's sister: The girls! Costume change #3 for daughter: Mario Party: Here's the invitation. Front, Back, and they will be put inside the mystery box! Scale is important! =) My wife rolls her eyes when I say stuff like "I don't like PAPO figures because the scale is all screwed up". She says "they are just kids toys who cares!" But for these decoration's she agreed... it was important. Small characters are about 21". Medium are 31.5". Large are 42" For once we actually took pictures of the process. This adds time but we wanted to capture some of what is involved with this. We start about two months ahead of the actual party day. First we print off some inspiration to guide us. Here's how we did 'shyguy'. Draw him out in the size we wanted. I measured how tall he should be on the cardboard so I don't make him too big or too small. Usually have to totally redraw it once or twice =P You can get a sense of the scale... the print outs you see are 8.5x11. I prefer a mechanical pencil using .9mm lead. That's really important! That .9mm lead is very strong so you can press hard and not break it easily. Mechanical pencils waste less time. I've used regular pencils and you are constantly running to the sharpener! Need a couple of those big pink erasers... you use them A LOT. Constantly standing back... noticing something isn't right... erase... re-draw. Then once we are happy with the drawing we cut it out! We've tried Xacto knives, scissors, knives, and utility knives.... Over the years we've settled on utility knives. Replace the blade often! Notice the table? This is the first year we had a table! Usually we are on the cold, hard, garage floor or out in the driveway... I'm getting to old for that crap! We would work on the weekend and I'd be sore the entire next week from stretching over these huge drawings, sitting on the concrete, and putting all my weight on one hand while I drew with the other. Here's some more cut out but not painted: Tunooki Suit! Power UPs! After they are cut out we paint them. Once they are painted we come back with a huge permanent black marker and outline everything. Really gives them a finished look and makes them pop! We get lots of our paint from the "eco site" where you bring hazardous materials to be properly disposed of. They have all kinds of things people got rid of but weren't empty so we pick through the paints and get free paint! What we don't find there we buy cheap craft paint. Huge areas like the boat we did a few years ago you can actually use a roller. Usually though we just use 1" or smaller brushes. Good stiff bristle is nice. My wife is the master painter; I do most of the drawing and cutting... playing to our strengths. We can both do all of it but we try to focus on what we are best at. Eventually though we both end up painting because it's all that's left and it's gotta get done! Here are some that are done and ready to go! You Are My Sunshine Party This is baby's first birthday! Thanks everyone! The craziness continues... Centerpieces for baby's party: Painted the whole wall in our garage; about 11' x 25'. First we drew it out on paper roughly to scale. Used screenshots from Mario 3 as a reference. Drew out the objects on the actual wall with pencil. Used straight edges and levels to make sure things were ... well.. straight and level =) I made a stencil for the clouds which helped a lot. Didn't post any pics of it yet; maybe later. Just outlined it with a big marker and used the stencil for the eyes and mouth. Then we painted all of the objects. After they were dry we came back and did the blue background. Ideally you'd do the entire wall in your background color first, then draw the other stuff, and paint them. However we don't have time to wait for the whole wall to dry... we did 90% of this in one day. Just have to be careful with your edging! Finally when that was all dry we came back with the huge marker again and outlined everything. This really is the trick to making not only this wall really pop but all of the cardboard props. You clearly define everything, the colors really pop, and it covers your mistakes where two colors meet. We also finished a lot more cardboard props. I'll have to get some more pics uploaded and some better pics of the wall. Bowser was so huge he didn't even fit on a 4x8 sheet! I had to cut out his body and head from two sheets and glue him together. |

Party was a blast! You Are My Sunshine: Here you can see inside the top tier... it's layered too! INSANE! Wifey also made a video that we had playing on the TV upstairs! Click on the image for a link to it! Mario Party: World 12-1 Ridable Yoshis! The became two-handed battle axes pretty quickly... O_o These are chocolate mustaches. Wifey made them using a special mold. Turned out awesome! 1-up cake pops! Of course wifey made these too and they taste as great as they look! Yep... she made the Fire Power cookies too! Sugar cookies iced to look like flowers. Individually wrapped with labels she made and printed! The CAKE! I even got to help do some of the fondant stuff. The characters are plastic from Amazon. Everything else was done with fondant except the star on top. That was done via the robo-cutter. Here's another neat decoration. When you walked in the front door you were greeted with this. Again we used a window found in the attic. Cut out silhouettes with the robo-cutter and put them on the window. Put up some signs to help direct people. Looks nice and is functional. AAHHhhhh! Time for the Yoshi Egg Hunt! Where are they?! He found one! After you found some eggs you could collect prizes! Basically an excuse to load up the loot bags =^.^= Freaky mustache time! What time of year is it? Birthday Time! Set production is under way. No pics uploaded yet. Compressed time table so no time for farting around with photos and forum posts =) Audrey will be having an Adventure Time party... it's gonna be epic... not quite as rad as the Mario Party but still awesome. Violet will be having a puppy party. Not going all out with cardboard models but there will be some cool stuff. Oliver is getting too old for all this nonsense =) We are going to do something more small scale. Haunted dinner party with a few of his friends. So keep your eyes open for that in October. |
