Wow what a hefty tome! over 400 pages of full colour goodness! A complete reference table of every race and weapon in the back (no point cost or rules with them). A lot of changes have happen and some old 2nd edition ideas with a new twist are back.

I've yet to read through the whole thing but I like what I see.

Yeah, got mine yesterday. Lots of good changes. Balance is being restored, missions are better, interactive scenery, oh, and the FAQs for every army went up today.

Damn they took away the Crisis Suit Wargear "Target Lock" That sucks. Finally Stealth Suits are usefull! With Shroud and Stealth they can get a +3 to their cover saves! So even the weakest cover gives them a 2+ save!

Frost Weapons for Space Wolves just got nastier!

A lot of people are complaining about the 2D6 random charge but I kind of like it, I also like that they removed the Run and Assault that Fleet used to give you. Instead you can reroll your run or 1 dice from a charge.

I also like that you can measure at any given time. I've been playing since 1994 and I just can not judge distances. I've never been able to judge distances and it has always hindered my game. Not any more!

Have to disagree on frost weapons. The sword is just ap3, and the ax is ap2 +1S I1. And both cost the same as a Powerfist. So best frost as could get would be S7 with the same ap and initiative as a powerfist.

I think the new hit allocation is going to cause some problems. Models in the front first. I will be placing Wolf Guard in Terminator armour in front of my squads now.

Exactly, if you add the strength from the frost axe to the marine, it makes the attack S7, AP2, I1 for 10pts. The Powerfist also costs 10pts and makes the attack S8, AP2, I1. Why would anyone take a Frost Axe?

How are hits from blast weapons handled?

The rules for blast weapons annoyed me so much in 4th and 5th editions that I didn't bother playing the game.

The Auld Grump, but then there were lots of reasons to hate 4th edition... in more than one game.

Blasts are the same, though now you can fire all heavy weapons on the move on a 6+, and there are tons of new things that harken back to 2nd ed.

Then I am not interested.

Those blast rules just annoy me that much. It's like GW decided to get rid of the 3e rules because they worked....

The random charge distance thing amuses me, because charging through difficult ground has been random since 1998.

As an Eldar/Dark Eldar player who likes assault, this edition is going to be very challenging for me. Units can no longer charge on the turn they enter play from reserve, including units that came in through Webway Portal.s So the Dark Eldar "Webway Assault" army has gone the way of the Rhino Rush.

For the Craftworld Eldar, units that disembark from a transport cannot charge that turn (except from a "assault vehicle'), even if the transport did not move. This means that My old tactic of speeding a transport into the enemies' face and weathering a storm of fire before disgorging Aspect Warriors into their faces is no longer valid.

So there's a lot of adjustment to be done. I'm working on getting together a shooty Dark Eldar force for a local tournament in about 15 weeks.

Yeah, but as a DE, all your vehicles are open-topped and therefore an assault vehicle. You disembark upto 6" from the vehicle, and with fleet you can reroll your assault roll... Still very efficient.

I am still sorting out the nerfs and the boosts for both nids and Tau. Tau got some weird boosts like firewarriors taking photon grenades gives them Shrouded against all shooting attacks in with in 8 inches. One of the last units you want in assault gets at minimum a 5+ cover save agianst Overwatch ?!?! Probably be helpful for pathfinders though.

Best thing I have got a solid handle on so far is the terrain rules will make terrain more dynamic. And if you use the Mysterious Terrain rules potentially game altering.

Thinking about doing a pscyhic cards kit bash for my roll arena.

I am generally seeing an improvement in the game, also seeing the return of alot of the elements that made 40k a fun skirmish game in 2nd/3rd ed. Most people play 40k for the modelling I suspect rather than the rules.

Question for those with the book, having seen the space station example board with GK and Daemons fighting, I am wonder what your take on the best WWG sets to rebuild that station would be.

First Light of course... Maybe some titan and Mars station as well.

Increased randomness favors the less experienced player. They are making random chance a greater arbiter than tactics/good sense in some ways.

The Auld Grump, still have not played more than one game of Warpath, but I like what I have seen more than anything 40K since 3e. Less randomness, more tactics.

I love WARMACHINE - I love the miniatures, and love the setting.

My only problem is that it is very... gamist, for want of another term. I does not feel like it is trying to simulate battle, but is a game.

A game I like, mind, but I like a bit more simulationistic rules.

I've tried Kings of War (Alessio Cavatore and Mantic certainly made it Warhammer-player-friendly), but found it too simple for my tastes. I like more crunch, special abilities and such. I'm about equally gamist and simulationist.

And the "I like a few models, but not enough to collect" things definitely applies with WarmaHordes. I like the Menoth miniatures alright, but don't want to paint a bunch of them. On the other hand, Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, and Malifaux are all games where I want more miniatures than I could ever actually paint.

Kings of War is definitely a better game when played with BIG armies, where the simplicity is an advantage.

For a skirmish game, or just a few units... yeah, too simple.

With 3,000 points on a side it gets better.

A possible point of amusement - because of the limited range of miniatures available for KoW, care to guess what company made most of the figures that we used for proxies?
