Every GM has some type of critter that they always come back to.

In my case, those critters include Evil Tree Things. Whether it is Dark Young in Call of Cthulhu, the Night Hatchet in Fantasy Craft, or the freakin' mess of them that I am preparing for the Retreat this year.

Small Evil Tree Things (Twig Blights from WotC), Medium Evil Tree Things (Dryads from GW), Large Evil Tree Things (Tree Warriors from Raging Heroes and Spirit of the Forest by Reaper) , Huge Evil Tree Things (Mossbeard by Reaper) and Freakin' Huge Evil Tree Things (Tree Woman by Ultraforge).

Mind you, this time around it is because I have a big ol' pile of Evil Tree Things. Borrowing the Old Margreve as a setting, the party is on a quick in and out mission. Or so they think....

I have used the Freakin' Huge Evil Tree Thing before - all by her lonesome she is powerful enough to kick the party's collective arses. Advanced Treant, with Witch levels, vulture familiar. Death patron.



Mine is somewhat less ornate and less fragile - I used plastic trees from Woodland Scenics to embellish the branches.

And she is not even the real bad guy....



That role is reserved for a fallen angel....

For the first time I am allowing characters to continue from last year. Level 5 characters, reaching level 6 about halfway through, if they survive.

Three six hour sessions.... I am sending off a warning that this scenario is more than ordinarily dangerous, and that I am willing to kill PCs.

Also, two scenarios in a shared setting - with critters that have been wounded/killed carrying over between the scenarios.

The Auld Grump

One has to be willing to kill a PC when one is God. Its the only way to ensure the players take it seriously. When I DM'd sooo many years ago, back when it was still "dungeon mastering", I would let my PCs have it easy, have a lot of fun with their characters, and begin to have a real connection with their characters, say about 4-5 good games. Then, things would pick up. Monsters would get tougher, villians would plan elaborate traps, and if the PCs would get too far out of hand, bad things would happen. And yes, I have thrown a Terrasque at my party... Only one died. The rest tossed him at the thing trying to get away from it... LOL

The tree guy in this set is really well done, in case you're in the market for something new...

On the evil tree things - if you noticed that each of the human sized evil tree things had a skull and other bones tangled among its branches, what would you think was going on? (Some of the Dryads by GW have skulls - I intend to add skulls to the ones currently lacking such bedizenment.)

The large and huge tree things do not have such ornamentation... yet. (I may add some.)

The freakin' Huge tree thing has multiple skulls, and a substantial part of a skeleton, scattered among her roots.

I do like the tree woman in your first post Auld, saw it originally on Cool Mini. Would like to buy it but am still wishy washing on it!
