As I mentioned on the 5e thread, I ran a game at Taco Bell - The Caves of Chaos.

It felt like old style D&D to me.

Then I got home and discovered The Slumbering Tzar waiting for me.... Talk about Old School....

By the same folks that did Rappan Athuck and Bard's Gate this is about as close to 'Third Edition Rules, First Edition Feel' as you can get. There are a series of pages in the back of the adventure for recording PC obituaries.

It is lethal! Also, heavy! 900+ pages of doom 'n' gloom.

So, should I run a bunch of 14 year olds through an old style meat grinder?

Strangely... tempting... at the moment. (They would likely handle it better than their parents....)

I have Bard's Gate, Rappan Athuck, and Slumbering Tzar... all within a hundred miles of each other, going by the map....

If you're going to do it, at least warn the poor chaps. I've found that a lot of the pre 25-year-old gamer crowd just isn't used to the concept of getting slaughtered in a dungeon and the old modules are unabashedly unforgiving.

Those old school dungeons are definitely better about being ripe with flavor. At the same time I don't think my PCs miss the level of danger...

Playing Battlesystem (2e) this weekend....

I used to really like that game, but I have a weird suspicion that I will still like it....

Yep, still fun!

2e used the 'Big Bucket O'Dice!' method - which I think worked better than the 'Roll and Look Up' method of the first edition.

Liked it better than the Miniatures Handbook, that's for certain sure.

Against Warhammer or Kings of War... it serves a different purpose, meant to run mass battles for AD&D.

Plus, Kings of War has grown on me.

It's official - my next campaign is set in The Wilderlands of High Fantasy. Starting location The City State of the Invincible Overlord....

I need to come up with some city fun.... I'm thinking wererats.

Eventual goal: Rappan Athuck. They gonna die! (For the record - I have loved City State of the Invincible Overlord since getting the old newsprint version, back in '77. I ran a campaign in the setting for 10 years.)
