Whoa. Just... whoa. ![]() My favorite movie so far this year, in spite of really liking Secret Wold of Arrietty. And I will tell you nothing about it! See it. Now I want to play Sky Galleons of Mars. ![]() The Auld Grump, really, really happy at the moment. |

Saw it...loved it... great adventure flick.... no spoilers here either. Had visions of making an Aphid from Skygalleon/Space:1899 - not anytime in the foreseeable future - far too many projects I want to tackle first! |

As a reader of the novels, will I be content after watching it? |

Good to hear. I've been debating going to see it already. Glad to hear it won't be a waste of the ticket price. |

I do think Diseny botched the promotion of this, especially as they want it to be another Potter. They really should have piacked something a bit more descriptive of the books like Barsoom Chronicles so folks new it would be a series. I mean not everyone reads awesome classic Sci-fi. |

I am glad you posted that trailer. I had seen the official one and was not that impressed despite having read three or four of the novels. Now I want to go watch the movie and maybe even pick up where I left off with the books. |

I saw it in IMAX, it was decent. Very pretty and expensive looking, too much plot though. |

That fan trialer is far far better than the 10 minute official one, not least because it shows what the movie is about. Looking forward to this one, hopefully next weekend (John Carter was my first intro to Edgar Rice Burroughs and has been my favorite series ever since). |

Got to say , the movie did not disappoint. Some changes here and there, but nothing that really changed the main parts of the story. |

I've been thinking - and commenting to some friends - that inview of the current trend of reviving classic characters to the big screen, that "John Carter" begs the return of Burroughs' other classic: Tarzan. Since the early days we had Elmo Lincoln (silent!), Gene Pollar, James Pierce, Frank Merrill, the famous Johnny Weissmuller, the equally famous Buster Crabbe (but moreso for 'Flash Gordon' than 'Tarzan'), Hermann Brix/Bruce Bennett, Bruce Morris, Denny Miller (first blonde Tarzan), Lex Barker, Gordon Scott, Jock Mahoney, Mike Henry, Ron Ely (TV), Steve Hawkes (Spanish productions)Miles O'Keefe, Christopher Lambert (his screen debut along with supermodel Andie McDowell as Jane, but whose voice was dubbed by Glenn Close), Joe Lara (TV movie and series), Wolf Larsen (TV), Casper Von Dien, and Travis Fimmel (cancelled Amercican TV series 2003). So much for the history lesson... There's been more Tarzan flicks than even King Kong! My point though is that as the classics never die, and its been a decade since the last interpretation, we will probably see something soon of Burrough's loinclothed hero. |

Tracey had some Air-miles rewards left over so we saw this last night at a late show. I think the critics are being WAY too damn hard on this movie. It was a great adventure with solid pacing, interesting characters, terrific FX work and a leading man who can actually lead! It felt like some mix of StarGate and Star Wars to me. Or to put it another way, it had the same sensibilities, same humor, same action, same music as a movie made in a more golden age of cinema. And that is precisely why I think it might miss the mark with the jaded hipster generation (but you and your kids will LOVE IT!). 4 out of 5 stars for me and worth the price of admission for once ![]() |

This is one movie that you DON'T want to read the book before going to see it. Just go and have fun. |

Yeah, Tracey and I had never read the book, so the movie came across fairly solid. |

I have to agree that the movie was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was excellent because they tried to put a little too much action and events into 1 movie, but it was a solid action adventure movie. |

The marketing was terrible - I think that corporate Disney had no idea what audience to plug the film to. The fan trailer was better than the theatrical trailer. Danged shame - I very much liked the movie, but the only other folks in the theater were folks from my game. The Auld Grump |

My sis and bro-in-law are taking the kids this weekend, and while my wife is going with her girlfriends to see The Hunger Games tonight, perhaps I can convince her to go see this tomorrow. |

Hunger Games seems to be big with all the women I've talked to. They're getting together to see it this weekend. I still have zero interest in the movie or the book. |

My teenage daughter is very keen on The Hunger Games, too. Took my teenage daughter to John Carter and she really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job realizing ERB's Barsoom, characters et al. My daughter kept noticing similarities to other movies and stories especially Star Wars (had an interesting chat about influences in movies). The one notable weakness was that a couple of times the the direction the characters took was poorly introduced, leaving me to think "Why are they doing this bit? Oh, Yes. That's right..." It all made sense, but each time it happened it broke my immersion in the movie. It's a shame the marketing was such a disaster. Despite the weakness mentioned, this could have been the start of a great series. |

Saw it, loved it, hoping beyond hope for sequels. Had the same movie influence chat with my wife (who was totally lost). |

I watched both this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed them for different reasons. I hope they find a way to do a sequel for both. |
