Ok, guys i'm trying to find a step-by-step guide for painting a flaming sword BUT i'd like a metallic sword. i've tryied by myself and the flames are quite good BUT the contrast between the metallic sword and the flames are unpleasing.... searching over the web i see that usually ppl tend to paint the blade in black/obsidian. Maybe it's a problem of mixing metallic colours with non metallic ones..... is there any way to avoid a metallic-nonmetallic technique on the blade? (since i really don't master it yet). if someone has pro tips let me know them! If you have some quick and dirty trick it's MORE than welcomed! i paint miniature to use them in games not for competitions so i'd like to avoid techniques that are really time consuming (metallic non metallic, blending, extreme multy layering and so on). |

I don't have a tutorial to recommend, and I'm somewhat at your level with regard to NMM (non-metal metal). I do have one suggestion to try: your metal sword needs to pick up and reflect the color of the flames rising from it. If you don't do that, it will look off. You might try (test piece if you can do it) doing some highlighting, or even NMM to the extent you can, using some thinned colors from the flames. It might be enough to get a tabletop level piece. Good luck (post pictures if you can) Steve |

Hmmm, the method that I used on a paladin's flame tongue was to paint the sword with three colors from a Reaper triad set - Adamantine Black, Scorched Metal, and Gunmetal Blue. Adamantine was closest to the flames, increasing contrast, with Scorched Metal and Gunmetal used to give the sword a similar finish to that of an exposed jet engine or blow torch. Darkened Steel for the rest of the bade. The flames themselves I first painted white, then painted over the white with red-orange, orange, and yellow, and white on the very edges of the flame.
