I was recently setting up my HP printer for wireless connectivity on our Windows 7 laptop and said "hmmm, I wonder how hard it would be for me to set it up on my Ubuntu laptop. WHELLL! It was so easy, I could have done it in my sleep ![]() > System > Administration > Printing, Add > Network Printer, Find Network Printer. BOOM! A quick test print of the pages for the storage box went well, and I noticed that there's also an option for scaling by percent (something I didn't see in the properties page in windows) (this will com in handy for re-printing that pesky middle drawer for the Roll Arena). **Hugs Ubuntu** |

Oh, CUPS works on some printers well enough if the drivers are good enough. On some other printers, not that well (but with my Canon Pixma MP640 a software called TurboPrint is well worth its cost). After using (k)ubuntu since 7.04, I've grown frustrated with it enough - if you install too much stuff to it, the errors tend to add up. |

Yeah; I can't recall any issues with my setup. I do have the occasional hang when trying to run some Windows apps in WINE, but then I use my handy-dandy task killer button (it's a red circle with a white "X" that when clicked, changes into a skull & crossbones icon, then you click the offending program and POOF! It goes away) |

I'm back on win7 because of a printer, I just could not get ubuntu to print properly and after 3 weeks resulted in a broken laptop! Then again its taken me a year to get the printer working on Win7 (stupid av software) |

I'm not in favour of the Ubunta release so I'm sticking to the previous version. 11.04. |

I wish I had time to figure out why Ubuntu won't load on my Compaq. I've tried a couple different versions, and since MalwareBytes killed my internet access (which seems to happen to a lot of people but the SP doesn't seem to address it at all), my Vista desktop is a storage device & that's about it. I'd love to just be rid of Windows on that box; maybe I'll have time to tinker with it in the coming weeks. |

Vista is the problem. try upgrading to Windows 7. As recommended by HP for Compaq users. If you want to use Linux, try one of the several different distro available. Sometimes when one does not work another will Suse Fedora etc. |

I'll try a different distro I guess. Upgrading is not an option; the whole reason I'm interested in Linux for that box is that it's free. |

You can always try it out first, on say, a thumbdrive or live CD. You can boot temporarily into Ubuntu (things will of course, run slower then if installed on the HD of course). I also recommend using the classic interface; the newest release uses the unity interface by default and it sucks (IMHO). ^^ Mine is set up to be very Windows-like, interface wise. |

Windows 7 is by far the best os MS has made to date, win8 is supposed to have a unity style interface too. btw the Win7 upgrade for hp compaqs is the best advice given by them as vista just turn them into door stops! |

I love Windows 7. That being said, I can definitely find merit in using something that is free... I say, stick it out and use the free stuff. Report back when you get the kinks worked out. |

it'll be a few days. I'm currently backing up my Cross Referenced Active Partition to dvdrw, about 150GB to go, 4.7GB at a time... I really just want to wipe it clean and start over, since after a couple of abortive Ubuntu attempts I have to choose one of five OS instances to boot from. ![]() |

Just a quickly I'm in the process of upgrading a laptop (got a new BD drive on the way) In a few months I wan't to upgrade the hd but being win 7 I need some way to transfer the Drive partition. Can anyone sugest a good FOSS piece of software for this? (I may be lazy and just reinstall win 7 but Just in case) |
