I cant believe that drek is still around. I debunked that in a 7th grade "research" paper. Actually still have the paper somewhere.

I remember as a kid in the 70's, these scary people used to hand them out on the subways. My parents usually scolded me for taking them, and threw them out in the trash, warning me to stay away from those weirdo cultists

I actually had a school teacher ask if I was into satanism after I told her I played D&D.

I knew it! The enjoyment and sharpening of the mind due to problem solving was a lie! The act of meeting new friends and working together as a group is just Satan's way of wanting me to worship him so he can stick spikes up my bottom when he's ready!!

HA! My aunts used to shove these down my throat when I was a kid, convinced I was going to sacrifice someone to Satan.

Now they realize I turned out to be much worse than they ever dreamed. I make cardstock terrain!!!

If only I could draw I would make part two the Revenge of Dark Leaf and Elfstar.

Interestingly this isn't far off what happened to Steve Jackson Games.

In the late 80s early 90's the FBI raided their facilities and took all of their computers (containing all of their manuscripts in the process of being written).

The reason was that the FBI figured that since SJG was talking to real hackers about their cyber punk games. The FBI was worried that SJG was basically writing a manual for how to hack a computer.


Hmmm... When was the last time you rolled d% to hack into your friends email?

Way back in primary school, we heard that someone was coming in to talk to us about Role Playing Games. Well, there were Fighting Fantasy books in the library and a RPG how-to book, so I was looking forward to it. Strangely cancelled at the time, and any questions were simply ignored. Simple fate, or some "concerned-but-not-enough-to-be-informed" parents thinking along the lines in these tracts?

Which is the creepier - the group of Diana worshippers painted into being bad guys, but who have used magic to find a living room big enough to draw that huge circle?

Or the man in shadow, clearly an avatar of Nyarlathotep, leading the book burnings?

I was just about to post the cthulhu tract, when I saw it in the last post. Hilarious.

There's something about these sort of anti-RPG polemics that has me wonder just what sort of thinking goes on in the heads of the people who create them. You only have to observe any group of RPG'ers to realize they're hardly likely to get fanatical enough about anything to send deaths threats over it, let alone kill someone. When it comes to religious inspired killings and wars, however, history and current affairs are rife with far too many examples.
Still, I guess they think they're somehow making the world a better place, so good on them for trying (even if it does turn out to be pretty laughable).

Much more damning is the explanation of the evils of Dungeons... and... Dragons. (Labeled, conveniently enough, Dungeons and Dragons on the FM site, available as a free download. Go for the download, not the sample.)

The Auld Grump

I was brought into D&D by an evil cultist...er...a friend, whose mom was a teacher. My mother was perfectly fine with it and I had many people in my family making PCs (playing, well, that is a different matter). Parents, sister, cousins, even my grandparents made PCs.

Some people were naysayers but I was ALWAYS of the opinion that while certain people may be attracted to RPGs, the games do not cause them to act out - they had issues before that.

Now that my kids play D&d (or equivalent), I've noticed that the parents who are uncomfortable with their kids joining in are the same parents who are uncomfortable about a lot of other things as well (e.g. some school trips, etc.). Not exactly a big sample, but it does suggest the problem isn't D&D per se.

Oy, Jack Chick. Those tracts have got to be some of the least effective proselytizing in any religion. Yes, let's all avoid learning and interaction and fun, because those things obviously drip with the devil's saliva. Also, living in a house with mildew in it violates God's law. Where's the Chick tract denouncing Tilex as "Satan's spray bottle?"

The fun thing telling Christians is:
That Satan the devil is only in your religion not others.
So if you believe in one you believe in the other, so you are keeping it alive.

They walk away with their narrow minds thinking I'm stupid, and do not take the time to disprove me.

Of cause having my TLX set-up and miniatures on display whilst they are trying to tell me the "TRUTH" is even more hilarious.
