What initially drew me to WWG was that I was looking for quality cardstock terrain to display my old metal miniatures from the 80's. I even ordered a bunch of new ones from megaminis, the grenadier classics line as well as their skeletons & orcs; all are 25mm. Since I'm WAAAAAY out of the loop with everything RPG since ... oh about 1991-ish, when and why did the 28mm ones come about? I like the WWG 1 inch grids which seem a good fit for my 25mm ones, so I'm perplexed ..

You also can mix the 25mm and the 28 mm models. The difference isn't that striking. |

I believe the whole 25mm -> 28mm is mostly from scale creep. Even in the 28mm range you get figures that are actually anywhere from 25mm to 32mm for their scale. Then you also have the true 28mm and "heroic" 28mm. True 28mm typically has the figures fairly well proportioned (some proportions you can accurately model, iirc a human arm/wrist would be so thin you risk snapping the arm/hand off just looking at the figure, so these are bulked up some to look appropriate) where as Heroic will have have the figures bulkier and slightly taller, a good example of Heroic 28mm would be Games Workshops 40K Marines and Catachans, where for a figure closer to true 28mm would be say Hasslefree Miniatures Kitty or Dionne. Even in a manufactures own line you will have the scale ranging over the spectrum, especially Reapers Chronoscope line some figures like Candy, Anime Heroine, are 28mm where as others such as the Zombie Cop, Zombie Hooker and Zombie Business man (a Zombie Three pack by Reaper) are closer to 32mm, then you even have some figures in the line that would be classified as Heroic scale. This I believe comes down to the fact that most companies use multiple sculptors for their lines. As mentioned you can mix 25mm and 28mm together. Its easy explainable by the fact that not everyone is the exact same height, you have people ranging from 2ft (infants) in height to about 7ft (Yao Ming who is 7ft 6in tall). |

A large part of it comes from confusion over just what "25mm scale" means. Some artists interpret this as the height to the top of the head of an average human (sometimes called "true 25mm") whereas others interpret it as the height to the eye-level of the figure, making the actual sculpt around 28mm tall. |

I suspect the real reason for scale creep is artistic/market appeal: You can fit more cool detail on a 28mm figure than a 25mm figure. So as long as the figure is close enough that the market doesn't rebel, the slightly larger figure will look better in pictures and in real life. It will sell better. So 25mm (top of head) went to 25mm (to the eyes), to 28mm (counted to wherever) to 32mm (or heroic 28mm, take your pick). When I get out my original pieces from ~1980, the size creep is obvious, especially since the newer figures tend to be on deeper bases, which adds a mm or two. But as long as the 1" squares or hexes still mostly work, it doesn't matter a lot. My old figures sometimes get used for tall hobbits, half-goblins, and the like. Steve |
