Monday, the first Monday of the Year to be exact had an unexpected customer turn up for a coffee and a chat.

Actually it went something like this:

I was sitting in the Sunroom out the back reading and browsing away earlish on New Years Day, about two hours later my wife comes down and I ask her to turn on the coffee machine.

She heads over to the machine via the loo - on the way back to the machine she stops, looks at me and asks "Where did the snake come from?" I give her a blank look so she tries again " Who put the snake here?" By this time I am thinking... well my wife is on strong pain meds coupled with handful of other goodies so her eyes are most likely focusing in correctly... but I got up anyway.

As I move across the room Alex's tone changes a tad "There is a SNAKE here" - I round the bar in a slow amble ... and my eyes catch sight of the drip tray with what my brain was telling me is a Door Draft preventer aka "door snake" laid over the tray - until I saw it head looking at me from behind the counter scenting the air.

I am so proud of my wife - she didn't loose it at all. We called WIRES and two hour later a chap named Garth turned up to relocated.

We both wonder what would have happened if we didn't find the snake... the machine was off so it wasn't warm and it's summer out there so it's not like needs a good spot to sleep off the winter. That and the fact we have never seen a snake in our area before. There is a thicket of trees next door with a pond in the centre with a feast of frogs so I do believe our friend turned up from there.

The Auld Grump

Just another morning in paradise.
I know some people who would have freaked out completly or more probably would have passed out before they could have freaked out. When I was young my mom said she lived in constant trepidation about me collecting snakes and other crawling critters.

My wife likes snakes, we actually have a red rat snake that's full grown, around 5 plus feet in length and very happy in it's tank.

Course my neighbor, who found the snake as a baby in her garage isn't so fond of them!

I thought you had that sort of thing happen every day in Australia.

Snake what? I was too fixated on the espresso machine. I really need one of those in the office!

The backyard has family of Water Dragons - which is pretty awesome to watch. Alex saw an Ekidna trundling along one block away, she was out walking and saw it slip into a front yard. And there are more sightings of Bush Turkeys. We live only 19km away from the centre of Sydney.

A lot of this is due to two main factors:
Firstly the culling of Foxes in the past decade. Not nice but not native. This has allow the Bush Turkeys and others to go on un-bothered. I also think that feral cats have been targeted also... they grow big in the bush.

Secondly there hasn't been any major bush fire action since 1993 - not trying to invoke the Lady Luck's Wrath here but Sydney's wildlife was decimated after that; coupled with a drought which lasted about twelve years kept numbers down.

It's pretty cool to live in Sydney - there are not many places in the Western World (ok so I pushing Sydney/Australia with the inclusion of the Western World) where you can walk through the city itself and watch Flocks of Ghosts dog-fight and play or have rainbow clad gremlins chatter in huge clusters talking of the day's exploits as the sun sets. The bird life here is pure joy to watch.

Regarding the snake - I asked Garth what it would eat; Mice, rats and small possums. Now I am wondering if I just had our local pest control relocated!

Man I'm impressed. My wife would have been screaming if that thing was in our kitchen. I'm impressed you both stayed so calm.

I'm very impressed that following trying to get it to make you coffee, you got it to have a go at the ironing as well.

We haven't much at all in the way of snakes where I am, so I imagined I'd be very creeped out at discovering something like that. Well done in keeping your cool.
