Oh dear, Windows 8 looks bad. It must have been designed by Microsoft Marketing - because it sure looks like a marketing brochure: attention-grabbing-gloss low-content. All the classic advice about work spaces the world over is: a) keep them clear and b) have the tools and information you need out of the way but in easy reach. I wouldn't want someone to come in and reorganize my desk so that, instead of providing a clear work space, it is covered in glossy brochures that I have to move every time I want to get something done. Why Microsoft think I would want my PC organized any differently is beyond me. Small wonder that Apple customers are so loyal. That's not perversity, just appreciation of substance over glamor. Splitting this out into its own thread for those that want to join in |

I have been running the alpha, it works even worse than it looks. you can't close programs they just background amd it seems the PC decides when to close them. It is close to a smart phone os than desktop os. |

I switched to Ubuntu Linux a few months ago and only run a few programs in Windows 2000 Pro via Virtualbox, I no longer have any need for a dedicated windows OS any more. ![]() I just read about Windows 8 in PC magazine a few days ago and was horrified! ![]() |

I am not necessarily confident Win8 will be the right product for me, but I do have to say I love the way my Samsung Galaxy tab's OS works, and if I could get a Windows OS similar to this but with the ability to run all Windows products on it, I would be interested, to say the least. |

If I wanted an OS that functioned like a tablet then I would get a tablet - as it is, can you guess the number one reason that I do not have a tablet? 'To open the tablet's menu you slide this virtual button to one side, then use this virtual rotary dial to pull up the menu that you want. You can't do that on a PC!' 'On a PC I wouldn't have to do that.' ![]() ![]() Hell, the first thing that I would get for a tablet would be a keyboard... the second would be a mouse. To paraphrase Zenguy - High gloss, low content. The Auld Grump |

I installed the Developer Preview of Win 8 on my laptop right after it came out and I have to agree with everyone else here: it sucks eggs. I've tried re-enabling the Start Screen several times and TRYING to like it, but it just feels limited and restrictive. And it's like they went from the mindset of "make all the apps available but tucked out of the way" to "if you didn't already know it existed, then you don't need to be told that it's there." The fact that I have to use SEARCH to find things like Notepad or the Calculator just boggles my mind... More and more I think the theory that MS puts out OS's in a cycle of: good one, then bad one, then good one.... is proving itself true. |

I have XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop... the laptop is a better machine, but XP is a better OS. I still haven't figured out where the "print" command is in Vista Word, I need to resort to Ctrl + P... |

That was kind of my point, that it shouldn't be that hard to find. I have lots of little issues with Vista, so I have a lot of little work-arounds with it. I didn't have to ever come up with a work-around in XP. |

Microsoft Announcer: And here is our development team, Mr. Howard, Mr. Fine, and Mr. Howard. Mr. Howard, what would you like to say to your core users? Mr. J. Howard: Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck! Mr. M. Howard: Quiet you mugs! Mr. Fine: But I didn't... Mr. M. Howard slaps Mr. Fine in the face. Mr. Fine slaps Mr. M. Howard. Mr. M. Howard attempts to poke Mr. Fines eyes with forked fingers.... Microsoft Announcer: And that was how Windows 8 became the smash hit that it has become. The Auld Grump, you can always fall back on the classics.... |

I used Ubuntu for many a year but with Kodak and creative acting selfish I had to switch back. I now use Win 7 and it is by far the best os I have used. I have a tablet with android 2.2 and its ok but I hate having to run a piece of software to force close apps, android wants to keep open. |

It also means that a user cannot kill a process that has been maliciously loaded on his machine. This is BAD. The Auld Grump, kill the process nothin', I want to kill the project head. |

There are also reports of 8 closing apps that the user does not want closed - including a long render of a fantasy landscape that got closed, without notice, during a ray tracing. He was letting it run in the background... and didn't even notice that it wasn't running. This is a good idea, how? The Auld Grump |
