I have finally gotten to the point that I can build a new computer. I am looking at spending under $1,000 and need: CPU Mobo RAM SSD for OS Video Card Case PSU It seems very likely that I can get the parts sooner than expected. I get paid tonight at midnight and could start purchasing as soon as tomorrow. I am hoping for that sub $1k mark with a PC that will handle some light video editing, decent chunk of gaming and maybe some light Photoshop stuff. I want a case that is quiet and not overly flashy. An SSD is not out of the question for the OS, but I don't want to break the bank with it. My thought was: Intel 2500k $220 (Amazon) Biostar Z68 Motherboard $100 (Newegg) Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz $45 (Newegg) Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-750 750W $100 (Newegg) COOLER MASTER HAF 922 $90 (Newegg) [Should I go full tower?] Video Card has me torn. 560 Ti Superclocked? Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB Toxic and hope for the unlock? Something else? |

If you want PC performance that doesn't sound like an airliner taking off, check out the and at . They're an excellent source of recommendations for quieter versions of high spec PC gear. In particular, replacing stock coolers with decent ones (see recommendations above) can both improve performance and lower noise.

Cooking oil for cooling??!! That's terrible. At work we use oil for cooling, but it has to be very specific oil. It does work amazingly though, cools boards that in open air would probably catch fire in a matter of minutes. If you use clear plating it looks really great too. LED lighting inside would make a spectacular sight. You can see ripples in the oil kinda like heat waves or the mirage effect. If anyone is gonna do that, I can get you the proper MSDS sheets so you can use the right stuff insdead of... cooking oil. Also I would imagine that you can't use any componants that have an integrated fan, i.e. most video cards. The added resistance of the oil would burn out the motors of fans in no time flat. |

Samsung has a new SSD set to be released soon that has some rather good performance metrics. The rumor is that it'll be released in October some time and the 128GB version will run for around $250. That's a littler higher than the others you were looking at, but it beats several other SSDs at that same size and similar price point. So, it's altogether possible that its release will drive competitors to reduce their prices to compete more effectively. Of course, the actual sale price and release time frame have not been confirmed by Samsung, so take all of this with a grain of salt. I'm looking to buy SSDs for my desktop and laptop soon, but am waiting for this to come out to see what the field looks like then. But that's just me. |

Up and running and loving the new PC. Windows 7 is going to take a little getting used to (last box was XP), but it is a good thing. I am really enjoying my new toy and can't wait to get some gaming done. For those that are interested: Steam name: wdf.SeattleMan |
