Canada has its issues too. I swear, everyone but me is fricken crazy!

What happened here was that Canada's Finance minister watched two Asian economic melt downs (to which American bankers were yelling "Let them burn") in the 90s and he thought. "Gee.. We have no protection against that happening here."

So laws were drawn up to deal with that risk. He was also instrumental in the creation of the G20 since the world had changed a lot since world war 2. Namely after WW2 the US controlled some 50% of the world's economic wealth and now controls only some 20%. The US was unwilling to deal with Communist or less savory economic powers. So the G20 was created to help steer world economics and expand its impact beyond the G7. The US showed up at the table only when its financial crisis hit.


Now that he's retired from politics, he's extremely active in trying to help the native population in Canada. Namely he's developed an education program which is funded by businesses to deliver entreprenurial educations to the natives, and help break the cycle of poverty. (This program is run by my wife's sister.)

Just watched a that discussed a nuclear reactor design that burns U-238 (depleted uranium or 'nuclear waste'), which (the video claims and I don't know) is supposed to account for 99% of nuclear fuel. Apparently it's feasible with this design to burn out the U235 and then stack the 'spent' fuel in the new reactor to burn it as fuel. And you can load (I think) 60 years' worth of fuel in at once, eliminating many opportunities for operator error in fuel handling. It sounds to me like, after amortizing the build cost of the new plant, the production cost of nuclear power would drop by a pretty amazing degree.

Has anyone else heard of this? What am I missing?

p.s. Coming back to the original title of this thread "Are oil industry experts too afraid to publicize the reality", our economic system actualy rewards situations where demand exceeds supply - not such a good thing in the long run.
