We have decided to try out Mutants and Masterminds (most likely 3rd edition) to see if we like it. We are going to do a one-shot to test it out. Savage Worlds is our second choice as a group and will get tried out if we decide to not go with M&M3e.

Any suggestions for where to look for info to translate M&M to other genres?

Looks like M&M is just modified D20 (OGL)so not sure you will find much for alternate settings specifically using the same modifications. The core rules will work the same in any OGL product.

I guess we will just try it out with supers and then see if we can't use the same rules (with maybe slight houserules) to run a high fantasy setting.

Some sourcebooks actually exist for using the rules outside of the box - though still on a heroic scale:
Supernatural Handbook - Heroic horror (3rd ed.)
Warriors & Warlocks (2nd ed.) - compatible with the City of Freeport high fantasy setting.
Mecha & Manga (2nd ed.) (Yes, I am sorry, but there are mecha rules for M&M.)

I prefer 2nd ed. over the current edition - but that has much more to do with the diversity of material available.

So I've spent a while today, on and off, looking over the basic rules for M&M.

I see no real problem with the rule set being used for mulitiple genres. It may be set up for superheros, but everything works for most other types of games. The only things I do not think it works well for are a "Walking Dead" or "Leverage" type game. I can even see a possibility for a version of Leverage, but I just do not think it would be an efficient fit. Otherwise it would do fine for the other genres we've been discussing (Space, Cthulhu, Fantasy, Zombies, Cyberpunk and Steampunk. The overall exception is Pulp Noir...I mean Noir, Pulp or otherwise, is pretty much the opposite of Heroes...so no surprise there.

The only thing I can see source books doing is adding in examples or pre-generated villains. The basic rules are generic enough to do a wide range of things. I've even messed around to work out the basics of a fantasy type character just to explore things out.

The downside at this point, and where sourcebooks adding in examples would be of a benefit, would be that I can not see anyone just stopping by for an afternoon and whipping up a character. The point system method in use just has too many subtle aspect/math variables for it. Blundering though it will likely result in overspending and/or not getting the right result for your concept.

The math for MnM really isn't as complicated as it appears at first brush. For pretty much everything, it's base cost + Enhancements (with a few exceptions) - Flaws (with a few exceptions) times Ranks plus or minus set modifiers. Things get complicated if you get into Alternate Power Sets (1 point to add another power to the character at the point total of the original, minus any points used for alternate powers) and Dynamic Arrays (same thing, only instead of one or the other, you can shift points around at will), but even then, it's a walk in the park compared with GURPS (base cost times total modifiers, which is a percentage of the base cost, down to a total of 20%) or Heroes.
On the other hand, if you need a good resource for characters to run, look no further than the Roll Call section of the Mutants and Masterminds forum, the Apparently, one of the board members has recently taken to adapting over some of the Disney characters to MnM3e...

And definitely glad you are taking a look at the system. It's a personal favorite of mine (just wish I could get a chance to play in the system...), as it hits the right level of customization and (lack) of difficulty to learn. And the flexibility the Hero Points give you is just plain fun to play with.
