Haha, I'm in my second year of Mandarin; that was some really cool stuff. Almost makes me want to dig the episodes out of the collection and actually hear them butcher those lines!

If it's not committed to film, it doesn't count!

All of those Star Trek and Star War novels don't count. Those crews never had those adventures. Period. The Matrix went for that funky animated "bridge" between the second and third films does count, it was committed to film (even though it was animated). The animated Clone Wars bridge between Ep 2 and 3 counts as well

Now, if those comics ever get turned into something filmed, then they count. Otherwise, they are merely speculation as to what "might" have happened.

Firefly was a fantastic show, cancelled way to early in it's life to know if it would have grown to be a solid hit. Pity.

I was pretty dissapointed by the comics personally. Felt like a bit of a band aid situation to deal with the hands of blue guys and I didn't think they lived up to the menacing presence that was built around them during the series.

I'm just saying that since the original medium here was film, then the story (for me) only continues on film. Everything else is simply commercialism at play. I understand it, I just don't recognize it as "real".

Star Wars was a trilogy (conceived as a trilogy of trilogies). So the story only continues (for me) in that fashion. Whereas The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever was a series of books. They can film them if they want, and I'd go see them, but if they decided to do a completely different plot "based" on the characters and worlds created in those books, I wouldn't bother.

So Firefly/Serenity exist for me on film. If Joss ever does another tv or film project to continue the story I'm in. If he officially licenses the characters to a production house so they can churn out comics or novels, I'm out. No matter how well written, I've got better thing to read.

I'm not knocking those who love the additional products, they are just not my thing.

I know what you mean. The original vision for something is usually the strongest. I loved the first chronicles of Thomas Covenant but tried reading the second trilogy while travelling home from drinking binges. For some reason I never managed to get into it, and I kept losing the books. One day I'll pick them up again and read the entire double trilogy once more. I certainly couldn't imagine them as a good film though.

Having said that, LOTR was always about the books, but I find the animated films to be amusing, though not as powerful, and the Peter Jackson films were superb... though still different. It can be done well, but I'm not sure how I feel about LOTR now. The movies are very long, but it took me 6 months as a kid to read the three books... now it'd only take me 6 (or is it 9?) hours or so.

I'm aware they are "officially blessed" by HE-WHO-MAKES-BAD-MOVIES and thus part of the continuing (or preliminary depending on timeline) saga, I'm just saying that they don't count for me. That flies in the face of officialdom, but so be it.

If Joss Whedon were to give an interview and say "My intent all along was to do two Serenity movies, and in the second they make a deal with the Hands of Blue, Two By Two group to give up River in exchange for returning a certain character to life (thus leading to the climactic third movie where they must rescue River again), it would make no difference to me. An interview is not a film. The character I speak of is still dead and buried.

Film it, and I will then believe it.

Or taking a book as an example. I'm not a JRRT guru, but for the sake of arguement, let's say that there has never been a single word written about what happens to the group that boards that last elven boat at the end of Return of the King. And what if Peter Jackson could assemble his entire crew and got permission from the JRRT estate to simply make something up and tell that tale. And lets say it was the most thrilling tale ever.

It wouldn't make a difference. Peter doesn't get to extend the material, official estate rights granted or not. What was written was written. Film it, rearrange the dialogue, cut characters, do whatever you want while telling the core story, and I will watch and judge it by the final product.

But "The Continuing Adventures of Bilbo & Frodo" won't interest me. Wouldn't buy it if it were a book, wouldn't watch it if it were a film or came on tv. Just not interested. And yep, that's kinda narrow-minded of me. It's just that there are already too many things to read and watch and discover without adding that sort of material to my life's queue.

While I loved Firefly, and I did enjoy Serenity, I do feel that the film was a little forced. It tried to cram an entire season of TV in to a single film. It was good, but I felt killing off the characters was more a case of Joss saying "See? I'm done with this series now"

I'll never understand why Fox cancelled one of the best shows they had. That's like NBC5/Sci-Fi cancelling Heroes. You just don't do it.

If another series of Firefly ever did surface (highly unlikely) then it would probably sell every bit as well as Star Wars does. Everyone loves it.
