Heroquest

Yep, that's the one. Never got Warhammer quest. But if you look around you make the whole set of Heroquest with very little effort.

It's never updated, but using the tools you can gather there you can get the whole game with very little effort. Then use Gothic Realms/CaveWorks/Chunky Dungeons/etc to build the board. And then gather up some appropriate miniatures, you can get cheap MK or DnD Minis to represent anything you want.

I think my next RPG campaign will use the Heroquest rules with some minor upgrades. Unless I can get my card based rpg off the ground, but that is looking very far away. I hate dice, I always lose my favorites.

I was going to post a link to Warhammer Quest Free, but it seems that the site is now gone - whether because the person running the site lost interest or because GW closed them down I do not know. Though considering how long the game has been out of print I suppose that it should not surprise me either way.

The new D&D board game by Parker games should appeal to Heroquest fans. Its only available in the UK at the moment. I saw it at Origins and got a copy on Ebay. Its an enjoyable beer and pretzels dungeon crawler.
There is no BGG entry for the base set but here are the expansions.

I won it for $5 American on Ebay. It cost $15 to ship it. $20 is more than reasonable. THe downside was that it took 5 weeks. Keep an eye on it, though. You may get lucky.

Though the rewrite of the rules for WHFRP was actually done by the good folks at Green Ronin - and they are concerned with balance. Elfs are no longer the be all and end all, halflings are no longer a waste of a character sheet, and dwarfs... well, dwarfs are still dwarfs, but are no longer able to become invulnerable tanks after a few careers.

Rules-wise my only complaints are hold-overs from first edition, in regards to the way armor functions, and the way the career system functions. The career system is a great way to create characters, not so great for continuing them. But they are workable, and no worse really than the class sytem in D&D.

The magic system has flavor, and is rather dangerous to the user's health and sanity. Strange as it may sound, I would not mind playing a hedge wizard....

The Bestiary is one of the books that I decided not to pick up, a wee bit overpriced. Not bad, mind you, just way too expensive.

And I will be buying none of the adventures, since I have the wonderful Enemy Within campaign made for first edition. (One of the best campaigns ever written for RPGs. Only Call of Cthulhu has better.) I favor the older WHFRP setting, which was a shade grimmer and darker than that currently represented in WHFB.

Ah well, it is a good game, and while I may grumble about it I do still like it.

Grump nailed it pretty well, IMO. I disagree with regards to the Bestiary, though. Its a valuable book to have that is a lot of fun to read. The equipment guide on the other hand is the least valuable book in the series, although the section on Henchmen is nice.

The Paths of the Damned adventures stink on ice, but I do like Barony of the Damned quite a bit and Terror in Talabheim looks good as well. These two adventures embrace the ambience of the 1st edition a lot more than the PotD trilogy.

And yes, The Enemy Within is still the coolest damn fantasy campaign out there.
