I could use a list of places to look for (and mini runs to look for) cheap miniatures of genres not fantasy. Primarily, I could use some modern minis and some supers minis.

I am thinking that bulk lots on eBay will be best, but bulk lots of what? HeroClix? Something else?

Bulk HeroClix should treat you well. Funny you should mention, I've got a whole LOT of DC Crisis HeroClix I'm looking to unload. I was gifted a factory set so they are just duplicates for me. Also, HorrorClix had some great regular folks.

Yeah, Clix is going to be best for modern/horror. They're pretty abysmal though, even if you're going to prime/repaint them (this coming from a guy with thousands of D&D minis).

Clix is probably cheapest and your best bet for modern.

There is the Arkham Horror series of pre-painted minis, those are dated for the 50's iirc, but they may not be cheap.



There's also Star Wars minis which work well for sci-fi games, lots of fringe (not the faction) figures that have swords or guns.

hero clicks are my main source but I have also collected modern miniatures from different zombie games. I found the hero click miniatures can be repainted very nicely I remove the click base and the black stand and mount them on clear plastic squares so they blend in with whatever scenery there on.

to repeat what has been said by everybody clix are great for moderns/supers.

If you are going with clix, also look at some O scale Railroad figures they make good bystanders. Clix are bigger than 25-28mm minis (WotC D&DM) closer to 32ish and the railroad figures don't look too bad next to them.
32mm = 1/50ish and O scale is around 1/40

The pics aren't great, but if people are interested I guess that I could post some of my own. He estimated it at 100 or so figures. I paid $50. Seemed like a good enough deal.

I have 144 total minis from the Craigslist offer! Of which 13 are in sealed bags and 3 are big (Two Sentinels and a Sinestro). Not sure which rarity is which color, but I have 51 blue, 41 red, 40 yellow and 2 silver.

This means that I paid almost $0.35 per mini which seems like a decent deal.

Very nice! Yeah, collectors value tends to be about $0.50 per figure, so that is well below that.

Great find on the figure purchase! That's the best way I've found for getting large groups of figures.

Well, thanks for pointing me to eBay...I have now spent entirely too much. I just did the math, though and everything averages out to about $0.26 per mini.

Now to decide if I should remove them from their clix bases and put them on small enough ones for 1" grid, or keep them as is and maybe actually play the Clix game at some point.

HeroClix can be fun with friends, but the "scene" is just AWFUL. Also, sets are NOT balanced against each other and their was MASSIVE power creep going on from set to set (Sentinel is helpless against anything not from the X-Men set from the same series). That said, is AWESOME for superhero skirmishing.

I might print some quick build modern stuff soon. The reason I have not yet is because I am debating whether to print at 1" or 1.5" grid. Anyone have something to say about that?

All of my current builds are 1" due to playing fantasy, but I doubt I will ever need to mix and match genres on the table at the same time.

When rebasing Clix, they seem to fit just fine on 1" washers, so I, personally, would stick with that. Of course, SuperSystem is gridless, so take that into account if it matters.

Well, it seems you don't need any more minis right now, but if you do, em4 miniatures has very cheap plastics.

Since M&M is D20/OGL based, I'd ASSUME it uses 1" grid, but I have NOT played it so just an educated guess.

The first eBay package arrived today with another 100 minis. I will try and set them up as they come in and get some pics as my collection grows.

Here a couple of pictures. One is the 100 veteran Clix that arrived today. The other is all 244 Clix I have so far. I will give a per figure amount when everything arrives since it has changed since I won a couple more bids.

I am all done buying Clix though. I should have enough to play pretty much anything I want lol.

if your not using the clicx dial 1'' is preferred in that you get more terrain in less space the average hero click map is 18 by 24 squares but that is 24 x 36 inches of space, I have taken a lot of supper heroes and cut off weird stuff and repainted to fit in my modern or 1930 games, or I turned them into monsters with the extra parts . I like basing all my stuff on a 1' of clear plastic as it blends with any thing below it. Some day if I get a cutter I going to have the base cut like a shadow . but save the dials that can be used for all sorts of cool things.

Still waiting for two more shipments to arrive, but assuming everything is as advertised, I spent about $.28 per mini for quite a few minis. I am still hoping to get a picture with the entire collection.

Once I do, any suggestions on how to organize these things? Base color? Faction? Set? Something else?

It all depends upon what you're planning to do with them. The base colors just indicate their rarity and point value in the Clix game. For the MOST PART, the figs are the same across the base colors for the same named fig. It's been years, but I recall that Sue Storm's fig in yellow (rookie) was actually named "The Invisible Girl," but she didn't look invisible. At blue (experienced) level her fig was 1/2 translucent. At red (expert) level, her whole fig was translucent and the name on the base was changed to "The Invisible Woman."

If you're going to use them for a superhero RPG, then I would group the figs that look like common people/police/soldiers together. Then group the supers by theme: bug-like guys together, those with capes together, etc. When your players are looking for a fig to represent their hero, they'll be looking for the obvious things like a cape, a power suit, etc.

Don't forget about (obvious) power effects on the figures - while most powers won't be represented, you'll want the characters in flying poses together, and the same goes for leapers, natural weapons (claws, teeth, etc), weapons, armors, etc.

Still waiting on the last, but small shipment. My collection at this point is a fairly impressive sight. Now to convince my group to play super related stuff more often...

DANG! What was the final total for that mass?

$184.34 for 650 minis if my math serves me right. I actually didn't mean for it to turn out this much. I had planned on buying about $100 worth of minis and won more bids than I thought I would.
