That time of year again, picking movies for the Hallowe'en movie party.


This year I am leaning towards Ghastly New England, or possibly Ghastly Yankees, if I decide to include New York.

The Innkeepers - a better movie than I expected. A haunted New England inn, on the last days before it closes its doors forever. And the employees decide that they want to see the ghosts.... (Yeah, they're asking for it.)

The Graveyard Shift - Bad. Very, very bad. With some scenes like a Call of Cthulhu game gone horribly wrong. I have a friend that had the actor that plays the evil factory foreman as a teacher. Despite the really horrible Maine accent that he uses in the film, he really is from Maine.

Salem's Lot - yeah, a second Stephen King based film, better than Graveyard Shift at the least.

The Legend of Lizzie Bordon - starring Elizabeth Montgomery (from Bewitched) as Lizzie Bordon. Made for TV, it was considered over the top, having a nude scene for the murders. Elizabeth Montgomery was related to the Bordons.

Maybe Sleepy Hollow.... (I like the film, as long as I tell myself that it has nothing to do with the Irving original.... As a film of the story, Disney was closer....)

There's always The Witches of Eastwick - isn't that set in New England?

Ah, a topic I feel like I have enough expertise to chime in on (though I am one of the many benefiting form the painting advise threads).

Personally, I'd go for Cujo over Graveyard Shift...or even Carrie (before the remake gets released).

Anyway, some horror films involving New England...

Wolf (with Jack Nicholson)
The Hand (starts off in Vermont).
Lake Placid.
What Lies Beneath
None are the best, but geographically fitting,
You could add in Clue, though it is clearly more humor than horror.

Honestly, not a lot of possibilities beyond those involving King or something Lovecraft based.

If you include New York, your options increase dramatically of course. Since Long Island comes into play you get Amityville, but there is also Death Trap and Jaws as some interesting choices that come to mind.

Witches of Eastwick is indeed set in New England, and is being added to the list. Not a favorite of mine, but a lot of people do like it.

I am going with Graveyard Shift over Cujo because Cujo is not supernatural. I want ghosties and ghoulies, and long leggity beasties, and things that go *bump* in the night. Plus, I want to have at least one horribly bad horror movie that is still fun.

There is a lot of 'nonfiction' ghosty stuff available - looks like nonfiction is going to be a major part this year.

Allowing New York State, but not New York - so I will also allow New Jersey, which includes the Jersey Devil.

Looking to see what I can find, movie wise, about the Rhode Island Vampire Epidemic. I am still amazed that no one has made horror movies about that. The last vampire execution was Mercy Brown in 1892....

Cabin in the Woods - a slasher film by Joss Whedon? Yeah, going on the list.
Dead Silence - the poster looks a bit like the one from Magic....
Trick 'r Treat - anthology.

I have seen none of these.
