ok here's the story:
i have some miniatures of werewolves and i'd like some variety in the fur color.

i have no problem paintin brown fur (base color black or mud wash and again highlight with base color drybrushing)

i've tryed the same tecnique with white and i'm not very happy of the result

and i'm totally lost for obtaining a nice black fur


ah i have primed in black the minis.

my idea is to start with a really dark blue mixture and then wash in black, will it work?
better with a different tone?

ideas?


also if u can teach me how to render a nice white fur i would appreciate (white black wash and white higlights doesn't seem really natural)


i'm using citadel paints FYI.

I would try priming with white then basing with a grey then highlight with white. Maybe even do a first highlight with a lighter shade of grey than what you based them with then go white.

It boils down to the idea that white is defined by the shadows you see, and black is defined by the highlights: the above idea of basing in grey and highlight in white would work, as would a white base with a grey wash (to get into the shadows of the fur) and white highlights.

For non-reflective fur, I'd say a black base coat, with a general dark grey highlight, followed with a light grey or white highlight (but only where light would hit the fur...) should get you what you are looking for...

I tend to prime black as well, and what I do is I start with the black primer as my base color, then drybrush a soft black over that (which has a somewhat velvety appearance), and finish with a dark gray (IE, charcoal gray) over that. That gives a nice gradation of colors and an overall very satisfactory result. Another alternative is to start with a dark gray base, wash black, then drybrush the gray over that again (since the wash will darken the base color as well as the shadows).

I never use black paint, except to darken another color.

I typically use blues or purples for black, especially hair or fur. Sometimes green. If the fur is deeply textured, use a blue or purple basecoat, wash with black until it is darkened enough, then highlight. Check some photo references and note that hair/fur have sharpish highlight edges

the problem still is for a pure black fur!
i think i'll try with a really dark blue as a base then a black wash, i don't know for the higlights, my istincts says "try to use a transparent lucid finisher!" this wait it should reflect light in a natural way.... or not?

the idea is that PURE black doesn't exist in nature, so it tends to be greyish brownish blueish....

i think i can handle the darkgrey, but i fear it would look like an old werewolf!^^

You could try a subtly dark blue for a really glossy looking fur.

i'm also satisfied with the blue-black fur!

from a distance it seems pure black but at a close look or with direct light you notice a subtle blueish tone!
wich is exactly what i was aiming for!^^

An approach that I have used for glossy fur black fur is to highlight in blue on most of the body, highlighting with grey along the hackles (shoulders and neck) and the head. Spray with a gloss sealer, rather than a dull coat.

Mind you, one of my favorite wolf minis is by Sandra Garritty - slightly crouched, mouth agape, tongue lolling, tail arched over back, ears kicked forward, and one paw raised. Classic 'wanna play?' pose.
