Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was a great adventure, not least because it gave the players something completely different from what they were expecting.

Interesting how this module actually played to the restrictiveness of D&D skills, improving the gameplay in the process. This was because a good dose the adventure's flavor revolved around D&D characters struggling to learn how to use high-tech equipment: Fantasy character randomly trying buttons on a weird shaped box (that turns out to be an energy blaster) to see what happens - oh yeah!

I've played both....

New Gamma World is more tongue in cheek, but you can easily serious it up. That's what I did. I let the players generate the characters as normal, then I let them pick 1 mutation, which never changed. (As opposed to all the time in the new Gamma World.)

You can use the new Gamma World equipment cards, and combat rules for guns and high tech stuff in 4e D&D. Monsters are kind of a meh... you can just as easily invent your own.



I was planning to run a serious Gamma World Campaign by setting the players up as present day pure strain humans in a small town. Like a local SWAT team or something. Then the 'event' happens, and weird stuff starts occurring. (In Gamma World its a merging of multiple time lines... I'd just make them start popping in.) Certain adventures would mutate the players. The campaign arc would involve discovering that they need to shut off the CERN-LHC, but to do that they'll have to take a beanstalk up (from other timeline) and take an orbital drop down.

For the setting get maps and tourist brochures for your local tourist trap.

There is another option for future content in 4e D&D, and that is Amethyst. I think there is a free adventure you can download to get an idea about what its all about.
