Has anyone tried taking the center out of a 6" base and making a 3" tile out of it? I just tried it myself, and though the center area is a little 'softer', the edges seem plenty sturdy. This'd mean for each page of template I print out, I can get a 6", 3" and hallway tile. Has anyone else tried this and found the tiles hold up? |

I use PVC board which is very strong, but I have done what you mentioned with the "Bow Tie" system of old to reuse them for 3" tiles or for the TLX boxes. |

In case there was any confusion about what I am talking about, here are some pictures I took of a test tile I made. First, here's a regular 6" tile base with a 3" tile base sitting on it. This is what I was looking at when I had the idea to cut the center out: Here's the back of a tile I made with the center cut out: And for good measure, here's the front: I've got about a dozen 6" tile bases sitting around, so I'll probably do this to all of them as a way of testing these out. After a couple, I might decide I'm just being too cheap... |

Good idea. If you have any leftover pieces of foamcore (e.g. one of the 'notches' from the 3" tile), you could stick it in the center of the 'hole' to help reduce the sag - just one small piece in the very center would make a huge difference. |
