I've been assembling Streets, Canals and Sewers pieces for a month or two now, and decided to put together a test assembly tonight to see what all works. (Yes, I have the planner, no I haven't really used it. I'm a see-it-feel-it-touch-it kinda guy.) So, I put together 3" x 4" (6 x 8 full tiles) setup, with two levels, using just what I'd built so far.
So, apologies if this is ground that has been tread, but here are some of my initial build observations:
* Putting together a table-scape that big is not a 5 minute project, even if mapped out. The tile tabs alone took me 1/2 hour.
* I wish wall pages had 2x walls with the top wedge, instead of 1x each with and without. I find myself using the wedged ones far more.
* I built too many corner posts, and not enough 3-way posts.
* I built more (sizeably more) 3" walls than I needed. If I did more detail on the interiors, that might change.
* I need more blank tiles, and more straight street tiles.
Other observations:
* Multi-levels are cool. Tunnels are cool. Sewers under canals are cool. A raised canal line is cool. There is all kinds of cool going on here.
* Nested arches create a very slick look. Kind of Roman, in a way.
* I like the look of the Streets-as-dwellings. A doorway would be cool. I can't wait to have buildings to fill out the layout with.
* I really like my prefab 2x3 tiles. They speed things up. I'm going to make more. (I have two canal edges, one blank Streets, one blank Sewers. Used all of them in my test build.)
Now, for tear down....
