Welcome aboard! There's a ton of posts around about printers and what not. For example: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5195 viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11952 The Papercrafter Tips ยป Model Building Tips, Tricks and Questions forum is probably a better place to start looking than the TLX support forum. Have a look through there and let us know if you find what you are looking for or not. |

I think the single most biggest feature is you can buy a re-inking station for that printer because if you're paying regular store prices for Inc. you can quickly spend a lot of money |

On the other hand, starting at the lower end makes sense if you're not sure how much you'll be doing. The most important thing to do is make sure the printer you get is accurate (i.e. when given a square to print it comes out as a square, not a rectangle). You need this to make sure the pieces all fit together right. The cheapest way to start is a low cost inkjet printer. Most of these seem to be accurate, however a few aren't. Check the Printer Accuracy List to see if the printer you want to get is accurate (or not), or alternatively get a test print of one floor tile and measure to see that the tiles is square (a test print is the ultimate proof, as sometimes a model gets changed under the covers). If you end up doing a lot of printing, then a CIS (continuous ink system) lowers the cost considerably, but it can be a bit of work to set up. Laser printers can also be lower cost if you print a lot, but accurate ones are much harder to find. A good starting compromise would be a low cost inkjet that can take a CIS in the future if/when you get that far. |

I'll give you the model I bought, because it works really well. I bought an Epson Workforce Pro WP-4020. You can get it off Amazon for $100, at leas you could last time I looked. I picked up a CIS and have never looked back. ~J |

The 4020 is square. I don't know how much cheaper it is off eBay, but I'm wary of buying stuff like that used because Printers tend to have some built in lifetime. So it really depends on how used it is, and how long you plan on using it. ~J |

My first printer I bought in store. All of my research was done online, but I bought local. I know that seems to be pretty much the opposite of how it tends to be done these days, but I felt vindicated when I got it home and saw the case had been cracked by improper packing at the factory. I took the printer back to the store, and they gave me the next printer in stock. They didn't ask me a bunch of questions, or grill me, or make me feel like I had done something wrong, they just gave me a replacement printer, and said they were sorry for the problem. If I remember right, they gave me a game on CD for my problem. You know the problems I would have had if I would have had to ship it back to the factory or wherever. The next one, I did buy online. It was a remanufactured printer that was discontinued. I got it at such a good price compared to the last one I was willing to roll the dice on it. It is now three years old and the only problems I have with it is that it runes out of toner too often. Only rated at 2000 pages, where my old Samsung is rated at 5000.. |

One thing that I've liked about my Epson Workforce 630 is the waste ink reservoir is big. I used to worry about all the things that cause it to run ink (head cleaning, cartridge changes, etc). But with a big waste bin and bulk ink, I don't worry about it any more. I did have my first refilling cartridge disaster (leaky cartridge leaked ink all over my hands) which has put the first black mark (literally) on an otherwise very happy and economical setup. Steve |
