Post subject: | floor template sizing issue? |
Just bought a few sets and started working yesterday on some floor tiles. I'm using 1/4" foamcore (I think anyways from looking at a quick check with the ruler) and after affixing the template and cutting everything out, I then take the cardstock printout of the floor and lo and behold, the now cut foam core tile is too big by a non-trivial margin. It seems like I had to trim 1/16" roughly off of each side before the card stock would neatly wrap the tile. I made sure that I'm not scaling either the template or the card stock printout so what gives? Is this typical in that the tiles will need some manual trimming to get stuff to fit? I figure what I'm doing shouldn't hurt anything since as long as the cardstock pieces are all the same size, it shouldn't effect anything, but now I'm starting to worry that it may have an effect once I start trying to print out and attach walls.... what am I doing wrong? |

Welcome to the group. Glad to see new people eager to jump in and start building right away. As for what you are doing wrong, good question. There could be several things contributing to your problems. First thing I would do is measure again. The old saying "Measure twice, cut once" is pretty much true any time one has to cut something to put together with something else one has to cut. Your 1/4" foam board is more than likely 3/16" than 1/4", but until you take a careful measurement you might be surprised. Second, your printer might be off just a bit. It is not uncommon for a printer to print a bit short one way or both, horizontal and/or vertically. Take a careful measurement both ways on your printed floor tile. A six inch by six inch should be exactly six inches by six inches. Not all that uncommon to fine one side prints just a bit off. Check and get back with us. Most people here are a lot more helpful and the more info the more helpful. |

Good point...I hadn't actually measured the printed template dimensions or the cardstock cover dimensions ![]() |

The other thing to keep in mind is that if your score lines are off by a little on each end it can add up (1/32" each way would cause 1/16" issue with the fit). Feel free to come back with more questions as needed. Welcome to the fold. |

And triple check your adobe setting when printing to be sure both the template and the skin are printed "as is" with no scaling or "fit to print" stuff on. That can mess things all up. |

so, after going home and checking, the template had the right dimensions, but the tile did not (thought I'd double checked the scaling issue but I guess not). Tried another being more careful and still had slight fitting issues. I think I discovered what you were saying about watching the scoring lines. I looks like if I fudge them to the outer-most edge of the dotted-line that's about right. Thanks for the help. I can see I have a TON of work ahead of me to get this all assembled and ready to build sets with but it'll be fun. |

If you are able, post photos of your project. Even the work in progress photos encourage us to get back to assembling our stuff we all have laying around. A saying around here is you didn't do it if you haven't shown it. By that standard I have done nothing. Working to fix that, but I suck making my computer do work. |

I took some pictures but not sure how to get them to show up. I've uploaded them to facebook but there doesn't seem to be a good way to do that. Oh well, not missing much...just a 3x3, 6x6 and a 3x6 linked floor plan with only 3 walls on it so far. Those posts are a PITA by the way. |

Sounds good to me. Every journey begins with a single step. More will follow and soon you will have much to brag about. Currently I am using Photobucket to store my photos to share online. Takes a bit of work to load them to my computer and then to Photobucket and then to WWG. That is for me, an all night affair. When it comes to computer stuff I suck so bad. ![]() |

It's a great feeling, being able to put a couple pieces together. I'm working on doing the same thing with the Friar set. Before you get too deep into things, you might want to grab a brown sharpie or similar marker and have a go at edging some pieces. Some folks find it easy, some find it hard. It may turn out to be more of a pain than you'd like, but it really finishes the pieces so nicely. It's possible to edge after gluing things together, but it is often easier to edge before you glue - depends on the piece. Keep up the good work, and thanks for posting your progress! |

Hey, a couple of things I noticed they you would probably end up figuring out without any help. First, the tab that is there where you insert the tab to connect two pieces. That can be folded back out of the way when inserting that tab. That way it disappears instead of always being in the way. The second thing is those walls with the triangle on the top (called anti warp walls), those point inside, so as to help hold up your second level. Will become pretty much self explanatory when you put that second floor on that building you are making. ![]() Anyway, you are doing pretty good so far without my help, but I found so much helpful ideas here in the forum from people who were having problems, to people who were explaining advanced techniques, that I thought I should pay it forward. |

Thanks for sharing the pics! Welcome to the fold and the addiction! The best advice I can give you is to keep it going little by little and to edge. Edging takes this hobby to the next level. People never believe that my stuff is just printed on paper. They think I bought a kit that was professionally printed or something. Keep up the good work! |

Yeah, I'm still stuck at this stage because I need to print some more. My inkjet printer I was using ain't cutting it. I spent $60 on new ink and now the magenta is out after about 20 pages. ![]() My wife's got access to a color laser at work I just need to get the files on a thumb drive or something for her. Just been too busy to get around to it. I'll try touching those up with a sharpie and see how that looks...thanks for the suggestions. |

Out of magenta How can that be? No one around here has ever complained about being out of magenta. lol Actually, it's always one color of another. My laser printer is now out of black. lol But I been down that road many times before, I have a spare bottle of black toner. Now, to find some time to fill it. |
