What set is recommended to someone kind of new to the hobby and totally new to TLX? I was also wondering how many of each piece should I make to get started building? I just got a silhouette and am itching to try TLX. |

Recommending a set is hard without knowing what you're looking to play. I stick to the fantasy line of products. My first set was the Lost Halls set. It's fine for all kinds of dungeon running, even if it has a dwarven theme to it. It doesn't get in the way. I use the Thoumont's set a lot too - I can use that to make all sorts of buildings. The Garden serves as my Feywild environment - lots of open spaces and arches, and vivid colors. I haven't personally built the Lair of the Dragon God or the Oubliette of Peril sets yet, though they seem to be both excellent for dungeon running as well - they just weren't out (I don't think) when I started. The common recommendation (one that I always mess up myself) is to start small. It's really overwhelming to think "Aah - I will build two dozen posts 'cause I'll need a lot, then I'll build a ton of tiles..." Instead, build one tile, a page of posts, and a couple walls. Edge them - make them look nice - get used to building them. Then you can have something you can assemble, and you can make the next piece - another tile or two. A couple more posts... etc. etc. I'm doing a massive build right now, but I'm forcing myself to go about it in this step-by-step manner so it doesn't take me weeks to have something to show for it. That's my 2ยข at least. Oh, and post pics! Good, bad, whatever! We love pics. Feel free to start a thread showing off your work-in-progress, so if you run into any questions, you can fire em off. |

Sorry forgot to mention I'm only intersted in fantasy. You gave me some outstanding advice and as soon as I am done with roll arena I think I may start with Thoumont's and put up a progress thread. I love indoor encounters and Im obsessed with in-game inns and pubs. |

I'm new to TLX, but have a few other models under my belt. I think I can handle it. It is a mock run anyway since our silhouette isn't quite calibrated yet. |

The others have given good advice. I would add some props to that as well, as they are a great asset to the table. |

Another tip: Take a look at the maps of the campaign you're running. You can then decide on how many of each floor, wall, etc. you'd need to build. |

Oh, I wholeheartedly second that suggestion of STARTING SMALL! I tried starting big a year and a half ago. I printed and cut ALL KINDS of foamcore and printed tons of pages of tiles and walls and anchors and posts. And only THEN realized that the paper I was using tends to split and peel when scored. So, then I started again with printing and cutting a ton of stuff. And by then I was burned out with nothing finished yet. it took almost 9 months before I got the drive to start back up again. I personally like Lair of the Dragon God for dungeons, but I've had crummy results with colors on my printers. I also really like the Oubliette of Peril, but it has NO DOORS in the set! That might have to be my first attempt at kitbashing... Oh, and another suggestion: calibrate your monitor before starting anything. Even just the rudimentary color calibration that comes built into Windows or your monitor's driver can make a difference in setting expectations. It took me a while to figure out why my prints weren't matching the colors I was seeing on my screen. |

I didn't think it could be too tough. I thought I could just copy the doors from some of the other sets and add them as a separate layer in GIMP and then position them right over the walls that have the decorative archways. (the ones not designed to be cut out) And since those 6" walls mostly have 3 archways in them, I could make several different versions with a door in any of the 3 spots and/or in multiple spots. Could do the same for Gardens since they have very similar architecture for the walls. They're mostly just different textures and coloring. |

Ooh! I built all of the Feisty Friar props - they are pretty awesome. I haven't built the Inn walls, because I invested in TCP for that sort of thing instead. ![]() |

I finished up Roll Arena today. It's not the best looking thing in the world thanks to my cameo being a few MM off. It made lining things up very odd and it came out, let's just say, not square. It is functional and I absolutely love it. I started with a wall on Thoumont's that gave me an issue as soon as I tried to cut it, but hopefully I can get some help over in the Silhouette sub. |

Have you tried adjusting your sizing when you print? If its off by a mm, maybe try jacking it up a percent or down as the case may be. |

When you're printing, are you sure you're printing 'actual size'? You want to make sure there's no page scaling being performed when printing. What kind of printer do you have? Are you sure it print's 'square'? Some printers have been known to print ok in the short direction, but be off by 1/16" in the long direction... Just some thoughts. |

I think the off by a mm was just the calibration on the machine. Thoumont's has a whole different problem. On one side of the wall I am off by 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. The otherside is perfect. The bottom of the page is not cut at all. I have an HP 6000 with all of the settings as recommended by the forum. I'm also a printer technician for Ricoh America so I'm almost certain that the issue is not in the printer, but I leave the possibility open. |

After a few building, you will of course need Streets. And then the other building set, the Friar. And then you will need the Sewers, and then the Canals, and then... you will be like me. lol |

I'm not going to lie here. My Thoumont's set someone gave me, and I'm not sure the person acquired it through legal resources. I stopped messing about with the wall and got Himmelveil Streets. The files cut out perfectly so far. I will be buying Thoumont's set soon where I assume corrected cutfiles will be. |

The other benefit of buying them is that you will have access to all the current kitbashes for the set(s) that you buy here as well as the kitbashes that get released for said set(s) at a later date. With Thoumont's that is at least half a dozen right now. |

Think I bought Thoumont from RPG Now or some such place. One day I found that all the kit bashes went along with the WWG sets. Don't buy WWG anywhere but here now. Even have Thoumont setting in my collection here and have never even D/L it, but I do have all the kit bashes for it. lol |

It ended up being a bad GSD file, but I'm going to buy the set once I get back around to doing it. I'm having fun with Himmelveil Streets right now. |

If one plays fantasy, I think it soon become mandatory to own each TLX set made, and lust for more. If one plays modern, same thing, or sci-fi. ![]() |
