Post subject: | TLX Hinterland Forests Question |
I just acquired the forests set, and have yet to even do anything except read the instructions. This will be my first set after I finish The Maiden. My real question is Complex Trees Vs. Simple Trees. Specifically, I think they both look fine, and wonder if it would look ok to use both kinds of trees in any layout, or should I stick with one type only? I'm thinking using both types will give me variety, increasing my tree options. Since the Complex tree branches can be added in nearly any formation, If they won;t look good with the Simple Trees, I'd probably stick with all complex. |

Though I own the set, I haven't built any of the trees myself (yet), but I'd suggest you do a few of each and lay them out to see if you like what you see. BTW, welcome to the Forums (if no one has said it before). And post pics of your Maiden when done. We all love to see what others have done with her. Try to take some 'in progress' shots as well. And Happy New Year! |

I've built a bunch of the "simple" trees, and use em all the time, both in Hinterland builds, and sometimes in other builds like for trees growing in my town/city or an occasional special tree growing magically in a dungeon room. I haven't built any of the "big" trees simply due to time - I'd love to build some, but there's just so much other stuff I want to build too. I'm happy having a ton of simple trees. But you can see em in action in the promo shots: I think they look pretty darn fine together, and using them both looks like it really adds some nice variety to the forests you end up building. |

The simple trees work surprisingly well, and being a faster build you get more for your efforts. I use a bunch of simple trees supplemented by a few complex ones. The scene is laid out with simple trees and maybe one or two complex ones for feature trees (e.g. the great tree at the centre of the glade). Characters and mobs can use any tree and I just swap in a complex tree as required. The result is much larger forest scenes than if I'd only built complex trees. p.s. Even if I'd had the time to build all complex trees, I'd still have built a bunch of the simple ones just to give the forest more variety. |

My experiences are similar to that of Zen. The complex trees look great, but so do the simple ones. Both work well enough and so I primarily use simple trees. A robocutter helps a decent chunk, though. |

I haven't built any complex ones, but I do have a bunch of the simple trees. Plus a chunk of more traditional wargaming trees. I like the variety. |

The difference between the two is really about time as much as style. Complex trees take longer to build, that's pretty much it. Stylistically, there's no real difference and they are meant to be used together. |
