Post subject: | DIY CNC Machine that cuts foam! |
As you may remember, I was on a bit of a quest for a better way to cut foam pieces. Cutting Foam core is NOT that hard manually, but I really want to get the process more automated. I was surfing the DIYDrones.Org blog and saw a link to this: http://www.phlatboyz.com/ It's a Do-It-Yourself Computer Cutter that can cut foarm (or slightly harder) material up to 1 3/4" thick! It's primarily designed for prototyping models, RC aircraft and molding templates for casting. The good thing for me is, I'm into all that. ![]() PLUS, I just wonder if the cuts are smooth enough for TLX tiles? Now the problem is this: All together it's over $1000 bucks (which is REALLY cheap for a CNC machine, but expensive to make tiles for RPGs. ![]() I was wondering if anyone had heard of this, seen it or had opinions on if it would work for our needs here. The Gallery pictures seem to show some pretty fine and smooth details (relief images of people's faces for example) so I'm encouraged! I am not planning on doing this right away, but I thought it was worth passing along in our quest to conquer Foamcore! |

The nice thing about a CNC machine is once you've got it programmed, it will make the exact same cut every time. Imagine taking the TLX tile idea, and adding in foamcore walls with tabs that allow you to plug them into the tiles. A similar idea was posted a while back using matt board, but with the CNC machine, you don't have to worry about if you've got the cuts correct or not. Granted, $600 to $1,000 is quite a bit of money, but it's a cool idea. |

Here's the unfortunate reality of foamcore cut with a CNC router. This is a high-end machine, too. Even Gatorfoam (a super-hardcore version of Foamcore) has major issues. It's very accurate, however, the edges are horribly chewed up (like you used the oldest X-Acto in your entire history of papercraft to cut it). (this is 1" thick Gatorfoam) |
