The answer is "Yes", Canon makes one that prints and laser-cuts. It only costs $50,000.

Hi everyone, Just got into this scenery and have started working on the apartments in 15mm scale (printed at 50% works wonderfully). However, as you might expect, its a bit fiddley. Now I've seen these robocutter seem to be an item of choice for scenery modellers here but I am wondering if anyone could tell me how they work? I presume they do not print and cut, just print. Therefore, do they find the lines on the already printed image to cut when they do their magic or do you just have to hope for the best and prey the image is printed as expected from your printer? Is there a machine out there that does printing AND cutting (if these don't do both already)? Thanksin advance for your replies. |

Welcome to the forums! The Silhouette Portrait (or Cameo) are the current machines that will do the job. They just cut, not print. The pages you print have registration marks that the machine cutter detects to align the cut head with the printed page. The WWG sets have registration marks for the pre-Portrait model of Silhouette cutters. Folks with the newer machines have had good success using the following patch kit: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=11584 Basically, you print out your model, then affix a little black square over the right area (some folks even just color in the square with a sharpie...) and that lets the machine read the reg marks correctly. Skim this forum a bit - most questions you may have are asked and answered, but feel free to post questions if you still have some. |

You print the parts sheet out with a regular printer. It can be inkjet, laser, or whatever you have. The printed sheet has to have the correct registration marks in the correct place on the sheet. You then place the printed sheet with the correct registration marks in the correct posistion (hopefully) on a carrier sheet and place that on the carrier of the cutting machine which is different from the printer you printed the parts sheet on. So far two machines, the printer and the cutter. There is then a separate cutting file that needs to be loaded into memory which tells the cutting machine which lines are cut lines and which lines are score lines on the printed parts sheet. Then if the parts sheet is printed correctly with the correct registration marks in the correct position, the correct dimensions of the parts printed with no scaling, the parts sheet placed correctly on the carrier sheet, the carrier sheet correctly prepared, the carrier sheet loaded correctly on the carrier of the cutting machine, the correct cutting file loaded into memory with no errors in the cutting file, the correct cutting blade installed in the cutting machine, and the correct pressure chosen for the cutting blade then the parts will be cut out correctly, maybe. |

However, if you are printing at only 50% (for use with 15mm scale) you will need to modify the cutfiles (and possible the registration marks as well) to work with that scale printout. Anyone with a Robocutter who can confirm how to get it to work with 50% reduced printouts? p.s. I don't think there is a machine in the domestic market that does both printing and cutting. |
