Hello Everybody,
I've been thinking about getting a cutter for two years. I finally pulled trigger when I got for $90+ shipping off Ebay. I pre-loaded the software (Studio 2.7.4) on my Mac, read the How-Tos, and waited for the package. Today it arrived. It's a CC30L-20 V1.30 according to the software.

After some setup I started to cut some Streets that I had printed up previously. I have trouble getting the reg marks to read. When I do get them to read after loading a couple of tries, everything SEEMS to cut fine and the Left/Right cuts are perfect. However, the Top/Bottom ones are off. Some sheets are shifted around 3-4mm. Everything else Lines up perfectly. Since the cuts are so perfectly matched I'm pretty sure it's not a scaling issue.

Any ideas? It's really frustrating me. I feel like I'm so close to the finish line, but can't step across.

I saw someone mention a few months ago that the reg marks were off with his PDFs. Does anyone know if this has been updated in the current downloads? Would it help to re-download the sets? Mine were downloaded at least a year ago.

What kind of printer do you have? Print out a 6" tile and measure it with a ruler to see if it's really printing square. Many HP printers, for example (maybe older inkjet models, not sure about modern ones) including one I used to own would print fine horizontally, but vertically it was off by up to 1/16". What a pain.

Thanks for replying... I print on a Canon Pixma IP 6000D photo printer. I measured the 6" tile and it's exactly 6x6 inches measuring the surface (not counting the fold over edges).

I'm out of bright ideas. Presumably the carrier sheet is tacky enough so that the page isn't slipping at all, but that sometimes can happen, causing a subtle shift. Don't set the blade too deep (if you're using the newer, adjustable blades, 3 is as deep as it needs to be, I think). Um... What else... what else... Try making a cutfile in the studio software. Design a file that does some simple shape cuts, and set the line style so they print out. Don't forget to use registration marks, too. Print it from the studio software, then try to cut it. It should be pretty darn accurate.

I seem to go through phases where automatic reg mark detection works great, and then it totally requires manual location every time.

I've had a couple files that just don't cut *right on the line*, but are close enough that edging the pieces covers it up just fine. Is this happening on ALL the pieces? If there's a particular page of a particular set, try cutting it, then snap a photo of part of the piece that shows how bad it is. I'd be happy to cut the same piece out myself and see what it looks like for me.

I'll do some testing to make sure the prints are good. I did measure the diagonals on the ones that I already printed and a 6" tile measures 8 inches on each diagonal. I think this confirms that it's square. I print some more though. I'll also try a different set.

BTW, is there anyway to know if a PDF set has been updated? I don't see anything on the download page about updates.

The thickness of the paper can also be a factor. My old CraftRobo had problems with thicker cardstock and would cut slightly off. As soon as I switched to the new SD adjustable blade my machine has been much more reliable.

I did some testing last night. I printed off a GSD file on plain paper and held it up to the printouts I had. The reg marks matched perfectly. I then printed up a Thoumont's Bay Window, loaded it in the cutter, and it cut PERFECTLY. WOW, I thought I had sunk a hole in one.

Next I printed off the anchor sheet and tried to cut.... couldn't find the reg marks. Tried over and over without luck. Here I discovered that you REALLY don't want to print PDFs out of the Studio software. It printed REALLY crappy. Back to the PDF viewer to print.

Next I printed a Posts sheet. Same issue... couldn't find reg marks. Looking at the reg marks it looks like it prints a line for the reg mark but doesn't fill in the middle. I had to look really close. I went to change my black cartridge, but I needed to order some new ones. I'll see if it's a low-ink problem with my printer.

I'm feeling like I have the process down, but need to tweak my printouts.

Stay tuned...

Home Made Carrier Sheets... Print Dark... if I had two tips to stress most it's these. I'm still in the process of cutting but I had to post. I'm very excited.

I picked up some Loctite Spray Adhesive and made my own carrier sheets with card stock (as recommended). I printed up some posts and walls using the "Dark" setting under the color options. I've cut about eight sheets so far and EVERYTHING is coming out perfect!

I'm in full production mode with card stock printing on the left, cutting on the right, and carrier loading/unloading in the middle. I've got a growing stack of posts and walls to assemble for tomorrow.

It's a good thing tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I'll have most of the day to build and smell Turkey & Pies cooking. It's more like Christmas for me! Happy Thanksgiving to WWG. You've made my Holiday!

Post subject:  Re: SD cuts fine Left/Right, but shifts down 3mm Top/Bottom

I've been printing, robo-cutting, and gluing the last few days starting on Wednesday night. Yesterday I ran out of ink on 2 of the 6 ink cartridges in my Canon IP6000D printer. I also ran out of glue sticks. I went through three large and one small.

I decided to try and replicate the library build in Thoumonts. I have the two floors done and a ton of walls (probably twice as many walls as I need). I did the ground floor in 1'x1' tiles with tiles from Streets to fill in outside. I went to print the stairs and ran out of ink. I'm also short on double anchors. BTW, I wish the anchors were split into upstairs/downstairs pages with alot more double anchors. I'm doing speed mounting to cut down on the number of edges there are. Where two tiles butt together I use a double anchor. This seems to make builds "cleaner" by not having such a gap from the tiles.

I have a ton of edging to do which my wife said she'd help with. My least favorite tasks are cutting foamboard and edging.

Thanks for everyone's help. I really feel like I'm "standing on the shoulders of giants" and am benefitting from others experience. I'll post pictures when I get the Library built.

Post subject:  Re: SD cuts fine Left/Right, but shifts down 3mm Top/Bottom

Just got my Cameo, and had the same problem as the Original Poster. My first page actually came out great, although it was just a bit off (2mm too much whitespace at the bottom of the page AND 2mm too much Whitespace at the right edge, but the top and left edge were great) by the end of the page. I assembled it anyway, and used edging to cover it up, since it was a bit for Lost Halls that was all gray and black anyway. I can see the defects, but I doubt my players will.

Then page 2 the *entire* cut was off by half an inch to the left! So I retried, and the next page was off by half an inch to the right!!

So I found this thread. Solution one - I turned the cut speed down so that it could cut through the thicker paper better. Solution two (and I think this was the one that did the trick) I changed the registration mark settings from invert to normal, and manually located the reg marks.

The fourth page was off by less than the thickness of the printed black lines!

I need to print a few more pages now and try other things, but so far, even at a slow cut speed, this thing is going to save me hours!!
