My first roll arena is complete!



This was a real pleasure to assemble! I really have the urge to make at least one more, maybe more. Partly because I think it would be useful to not have to share the box between me and my son when rolling, but partly because it was so darn satisfying to make. I was afraid it would slide around a lot when rolling on it, but it's a fairly substantial box.

I feel I learned a couple things doing the build that might be worth sharing.

1) If you don't have matboard or cereal box board for the base plates, I think at least two additional layers of cardstock is the way to go. I used a single layer, and it isn't as rigid as I'd like. Maybe the instructions should update the recommendation.

2) Do not wait until step 8 & 9 to assemble the trays. Do this BEFORE step 7, and use the trays to make sure that they will fit well between the supports on the bottom layer. I didn't do this, and I was off by ONE STINKING MILLIMETER, making one of the drawers hard to use. By the time I discovered this, it was too late. If anyone else is running into this, I think the instructions should remedy this.

3) I haven't tried this, but I think putting a strip of cardstock front-to-back to line where the card tray slides would be useful. I find that when I side in the tray, it often gets snagged on the corners of the back support. If there's room for the cardstock (or even plain paper, I would imagine) then I'd think the tray would slide easier. If anyone else experiences this (it might just be my wonky build) then maybe the instructions should include this.

4) I sandwiched two layers of cardstock between two wheels, so they're double-sided and really rigid.
They feel satisfyingly strong.

5) I put a layer of cardstock under the card tray, because without it, it was really floppy. It's still floppy, just not really floppy.

6) If I were to do this again, I'd probably do the door faces differently. I might take the front and back and cut them apart so I can add an extra layer of cardstock in between.

7) In the card tray, I might add little strips along the edges in the tray bottoms to lift the cards up, maybe just one or two cardstock-sheet thick. It'll make lifting all the cards out easier - right now I have to pull the tray out and flip it upside down to get all the cards out.

This is my second WWG model (right after I finished the Atlantis Squid), but I'm not a novice at papercrafting (I've build a dozen pages of minis, several ships, and a few buildings before now...)

This was in the top-5 builds for me in terms of fiddly-complexity (the Squid tentacles were up there too..) I wish I'd read this thread before assembling the bottom layer as well, as my drawers are a bit sticky.

I also took some advice and bought some glossy cardstock from my local Fedex-Office copy shop. I don't regret the challenges at all, given how drop-dead gorgeous the final product was:


The "dice drawer" is awesome for storing my laser-cut condition/status tokens, Action Points, and fate chits.

I now have a complete travel-edition DM's token kit. Now to get on kit-bashing those lovely cards!

Oh yeah - can anyone explain why we're not supposed to glue in the corner caps? They are a bit loose, so I'm tempted to glue them down for stability...

I think there are going to be some optional extras coming up in future releases, these will let us change the look of the arena to match the set we are using it with
Thats my take on why they are removable anyways...Feel free to glue 'em down if you need to tho, or make another set that fits a bit better they dont take long:)

Your roll arena looks great! I agree the corners pop out VERY easily... I have a tiny roll of tape holding them down. They still come off easily, but they aren't FALLING out anymore!
