OK. I bit the bullet and bought the Harbormaster set, and set to work learning how to convert things to TLX. As expected, making floor tiles is a piece of cake. Posts - not so bad, but I'm still trying to figure out the right balance of interior/exterior post styles. The walls take some time, but I'm getting a little better with my GIMP skills. Here's my first test shot - I assembled one hallway floor piece, a couple posts and two styles of 3" wall before running out of time this evening. More to come! Gak - my grey marker totally KILLED that post! It bleeds like crazy. It's a Bic Mark-It pen. I've been using a brown one for the floor tiles and that doesn't bleed nearly as bad. I tried black sharpie on another post, and it's still no good. I might try to buy an even lighter ink pen... Updated Feb 20 2011 I made a matrix of all the types of walls I want to make. I think I'll end up with 15 types of 3" walls, and 15 types of 6" walls. I've got a rough draft of the 3" walls done. Here's a bunch of the 3" walls: Here's a shot of the interior/exterior door. My thought was to keep the steel beams on the interior/exterior walls, but have none on the purely interior walls. Here's one of the interior walls: Here's the first interior wall I did. It's got a lot of the decay markings. I removed from a lot of other interior walls. I admit to not having edged these pieces. I haven't gotten around to a better pen set for the Harbormaster textures, but I am likely to tweak the wall styles enough that I'll do a complete set later. |

Looking great so far (apart, of course, from the edging problem on those psots). 
Denny and a bunch of others recommend the Crayola pens for edging. Been meaning to try them out, and because they're pretty cheap here will be able to pick up a pack with a wide range of colors - including pale blue for the Harbourmaster interiors. |

I decided to spend another couple hours finishing the easy stuff... I now have seven floor tiles - 3 hallway, 2 small and 2 large. I can easily imagine one or two more floor tiles, but I really need to finish up the 3- and 4-way posts so I can make a complete building. Here's the basic wood 6"x6" tile. Now, this tile here was fun, removing an entire carpet off of 12 of the squares... My copy-paste skills are officially at their limits. I somehow managed to paste the same tile twice next to each other... If I remember, I'll fix that. Here's the same tile with some harbor junk in the corner: I did two more hallway tiles: I don't know what that thingy is lying on the floor, but I'm going to edit it out. Having it show up in THREE of my tiles was just me being lazy... and I made two small tiles: I don't really care for how the black/white tile came out, but I'm not going to stress over the texture now until I get more done. When I get back from vacation, I hope to have the posts done, and I can put some props together to make my first Harbormaster floor plan. |

Well, I had a short vacation break and couldn't do much more than an hours work on my walls... I sketched out a floor plan and picture of what I'm going to make for my Harbormaster building to get an idea of what kinds of posts and walls I really need. I've been going in circles trying to decide how I want to move forward on this. I started coming up with all kinds of combinations of wall styles so I could plug anything with anything. That was a good exercise to learn the lesson that I really need to keep the posts SIMPLE. I don't want a hundred different types of posts. So, I went with the Thoumont's style of having posts with a wooden interior and stone face exterior that matches the Harbormaster stone style. I still have a set of posts that use the metal beams for the interior, just as a different style. For the walls, I had to decide how to work the two different interior styles - there's a blue painted wall style and a wood panel style. For now, I'm going to do the following. My first floor exterior will be a full stone wall (from Harbormaster) and the interior will be different blue wall pieces, so I'll have 3" and 6" blue-on-blue walls, and blue-on-stone walls. For posts, I'll likely use the metal beams on this floor. For the second floor, I decided to start with Thoumont's beam walls as a base, and I'm doing a blue interior and a yellow interior. So, I've got 3" and 6" blue-on-blue, blue-on-yellow, yellow-on-yellow, blue-on-plaster and yellow-on-plaster. All the posts on this floor will be wood. My thought was to use the yellow walls for now as a special second floor room (like a bedroom) instead of the wood panels. I'm not sure my limited skills will let me make good enough walls out of the wood panel textures I have available from the Harbormaster set. Now that I'm back from vacation, I hope to rattle off the 2nd floor walls windows - I'm hoping I can keep the style of Harbormaster - and finish some interior walls with doors. I've converted a ton of Thoumont's roof pieces to a greenish color and brownish color in an attempt to get some variety, so I'll try one of those on the top. More to come! |
