Post subject: | TLX Hex Grid |
Hi all! Been lurking on this forum for a while now, and finally decided to post something. GURPS is my system of choice when it comes to RPGs, so after I discovered this amazing company it kind of bummed me out that hex grids aren't supported. Last night I sat in front of my computer for several hours creating templates to add a hex grid to TLX tiles. The whole process took longer than it probably should have since I stubbornly tried to find a way to have only two templates per tile size, but I finally came to realize that such was simply not possible. After realizing that I had to have 4 templates per tile size, the whole thing sailed along quite smoothly. The templates are designed to be used with Photoshop and are extremely simple to use. Open the gridless tile you wish to modify, and the appropriate template in Photoshop, then duplicate the template layer onto the gridless tile. Doing it this way will automatically align the grid correctly. Fiddle with the template layer's blending option and/or opacity to get the effect you want and save (just don't save over your original, lol). Simple as that! The templates even come in two different sizes of hexes to suit your needs. I personally think the smaller ones are a little too small, but I thought it would be better to include them than not. I tried to make a set between these two sizes, but I couldn't get it to work unfortunately. As I said earlier, each tile size has a total of 4 different templates with the hexes positioned differently. This is in order to give options that allow the gridlines to align no matter the layout of the tiles. One thing I want to mention however is that ramp tiles are slightly larger than a 6x6 ground tile in one dimension, so the hexes for them have been stretched slightly in that dimension. I tried adding hexes to adjust, but ended up with the edges being a mess, so I opted for the simpler alternative. Also, stairs haven't be done. I considered it, but felt that it was ultimately unneeded, as I would essentially just be placing a hex in each box already present. I'll upload the PDFs of the templates later today hopefully, but I just want to make sure doing so is okay with Denny first. There are no images of tiles in the PDFs, only hexagons positioned in the correct places to be overlaid on the tiles. |

First off: Welcome to the forum deadpirate! Second, your overlay templets sound very useful. I've considered putting hexes on my tiles a few times, but I have always given up because I could never get the hexes to line up right. Third, just FYI, there are a few older sets that have hexes. I believe and at a minimum support hexes. They might be worth checking out. Hinderlands particulary I find is useful in all kinds of games. |

I knew there were a couple of older sets that had hex grids, but I like TLX soooo much! I've been considering getting Hinterlands though as it seems like an incredibly useful set. |

I'm also a GURPS player and a constant thorn in CapnG's side about hexes ![]() I've come to the conclusion to make sure my miniatures are based on hexes and to use the and just print off gridless tiles and if I need something that is blast related I use a sheet of transparency with a hexgrid printed on it. |

I only build gridless. I have been considering simply making transparency overlays if I need a grid. Now I have a laser printer so my transparencies are cheaper than inkjet ones. But since they are reusable printing a map set is a one time investment. Much cheaper than having to print and build all 4 of those variations for each tile you were talking about for hex. |

Clear glue dots might work to secure a transparancy overlay on gridless ground sheets that do not have the anchor attachments. |
