Right there with you man... I had this same trouble and hope this helps...
Here are the steps I use:
1) Open your file in Adobe Reader, and go to Edit -> Preferences.
2) In the General section of the preferences, check the "Use fixed resolution for Snapshot tool images" and set the pixels/inch to something you like. I use 250 pixels/inch for reasons I can't remember.
3) Click OK to accept the change and exit preferences.
4) Open the Tools menu and select "Select & Zoom".
5) Click Snapshot Tool to select the snapshot tool.
6) Fiddle with your view until all of what you want is viewable, then click on the page you want to copy with the snapshot tool. What you clicked on will be on your clipboard.
7) Open Gimp.
8) Click File -> New.
9) In the Create a New Image dialog, click the + symbol next to Advanced Options.
10) Set the X and Y resolution to whatever you set the pixels/inch to in step 2. I use 250 pixels/inch (you may have to change the units being used to the right of those settings).
11) Make sure to set your image size to a width of 7.5 and a height of 10 or you might end up getting your image cropped or scaled by the printer.
12) Click OK.
13) In the new image you've opened, click Edit and then Paste. Your image should be correctly set up size-wise, and when you print it it should scale correctly (provided you've got scaling and such turned off for your printer.
