Ok, so many of us know our way around graphics programs like Photoshop or the Gimp to kitbash existing models. But what about 3D software, for those of us who want to create *new* designs?This thread is set up to share experiences with various software platforms that can take us beyond Flatland. To start out, here are two packages I've seen recommended before, but that I don't have any personal experience with. I'd love to hear some comments on their useability: - : The only piece of software I'm aware of that is specifically designed to "unfold" a 3D model into a flat paper design. Shareware, or $38 to get access to all features. Anyone know what is or is not included in the free version? - Pepakura doesn't actually do 3D design, only the unfolding, so you'll also need a 3D modeling package. They recommend , which is a limited freeware version of the shareware Metasequoia package (which is only available in Japan). Both of these are Japanese software packages, so support for English may be spotty. Any user experiences with either of these would be most welcome. What other programs are out there? What do *you* use? For that matter, what do Denny & Co use for their 3D modeling needs? |

Thanks, Mel! Some great info there. So... how did you get a hold of Metasequoia? Could you say a little more about how MetasequoiaLE is "gimped"? Any other recommendations for *lightweight* 3D packages? |

You can get Blender for free (it's open source). As I understand it, the interface is love it/hate it, but you can't beat the price. Gallery from the Blender website: |

Wings 3D is what I use to figure stuff out. It's got an unfolding feature, too. It just does a mess of polygons, but as long as you know what you designed, it's not that big a deal. It's also available for OS X & Windows, and it's free. It's got a steep learning curve, but a fantastic tutorial that is actually easy to learn from. Worth checking out. [edit] I should also mention that it's in beta still (though quite stable), and is likely only free while in beta. |
