I only spent a few minutes on this, but I wanted to see how the Hinterland Cliffs might combine with the mining tunnel walls I've got. cave_001.jpg [ 15.84 KiB | Viewed 28833 times ] It needs some color work on the stalactite layer, it needs some shadows below the stalactites, it needs some work on the underlying cliff texture (the green moss didn't work as well as I had hoped)... Hmmm... It may just be too 'rocky' for what I want. I dunno. I'll keep playing! |

I also need the ceiling and floor edges to line up side by side, so they'll work when assembled next to other walls... I think I'll try adding some vertical texture to the base wall too - maybe take some of the stalactites and place them randomly and really blend them in. Continuing to play... |

Ok. One more. This time, I made the edges kind of line up together, I fiddled with the dropshadows a bit (I still think this might be too dark) and I used the IWarp tool in GIMP to add some contour to the rocks at the top and bottom. But, maybe that's something I can make vary on a couple walls. The shading of the rocks is pretty unsatisfactory, but it's pretty much what you get from the Cliffs set. What I mean is, there's a big cave entrance wall from the Cliffs set, and to add depth, it looks like a big ol' dropshadow was added to the rock. Unfortunately, that has the effect of making a very harsh cut - the edges of the rocks have no depth. I don't know how much I can improve on that, but I'll continue to tinker. I agree too many stalactites that are too regular, and not enough stalagmites. That said, I love the background for the walls. |

My plan for this is as follows: (1) I need to create kitbash templates for all of the Hinterland Cliffs tiles and walls. (2) I need to texture all of the tiles with my mining floor textures. (this step should be quick!) (3) I need to get some work done on the walls to make them not look so bad. once I have a wall texture that is suitable... (4) I want to make some free-standing geometries - boxy builds - to add more variation to the tunnel placement/feel. If I can make some simple fold-flat box builds. and then... (5) I want to make ramps to allow the mine tracks to go up/down levels. and then... I want to make some new cave scenery. It's not going to happen super quickly, but I haven't stopped thinking about it. I'm working on other things now, but will likely start working on this in February. |

From what I understand, you will create cavern walls using the cliff shapes ? Do you also intend to have some "standard" walls (ie straights) ? |

Much like the cliff set had straight walls, yes. I'll have all the cliff pieces represented, including 3" and 6". |

Sigh. I haven't had much free time for crafting. My team's deadline has slipped, extending our frantic crunch time from ending in December to now ending in March. I'm still trying to juggle my own fun projects with this particular kitbash, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to get it done before March. Sorry gang! |

When it comes to caves I use aluminum foil as you can create a completely 3-D looking cave in just a few minutes by crumpling it together into any shape spraying it dark brown and highlighting With a lighter color by dry brush technique. I can put together a whole custom looking Are in about 30 min. |

It's true, and I've seen your pictures - they look pretty great. For me, though, it's not the option I'm looking for. If you have the link handy to the pics you've posted, you might want to repost it though - other people might be looking for exactly this! I'm not into painting, so that's one strike. They also don't fit all that well along with other TLX pieces, so that's another strike for me. Lastly, they don't help my desire to make a mining system that spans multiple levels, so that's strike three. I do like the effect, and think it's a great way to make organic, natural looking cave features. It's just not what *I* am looking for. |
