I mentioned I might try this. Not sure how helpful it will be for people. I'm using GIMP to play with textures, and if you've got a little familiarity with importing PDFs for kitbashing, then maybe you'll find this useful.
I'm just going to describe some simple techniques for "painting" wooden walls like those in the DeadFall sets. If you don't own them, seriously consider it. They are great for lots of environments, and great for kitbashing!
So, here's some ideas of how you can change the color of things:
1) Select the Paintbrush tool. Change it's mode to Darken only. Pick a nice dark red color. I like using a round brush with a fuzzy edge, like the brush "2. Hardness 050". Change the opacity to something like 25. Now paint over the wall! Keeping the mouse button down will prevent the painting from darkening itself. If you release the mouse button then repeat the process, it will darken what's already been put down. Here's an example of what the effects are. The sections represent (1) no painting, (2) painting over the area once, (3) twice, (4) three times.

Play with the color. Play with the opacity of the paintbrush. Using selections, try restricting the painting of one color to the siding, and another color to the beams.
Try EVERY PAINT MODE to see what you can do.
Here's an example where one side uses "Darken only" and the other uses "Color" as the mode:

2) Use the section tool to select an area to color. From the Colors menu, select Colorize, and play with the sliders. You can get some pretty ugly effects! But, try reducing the contrast while picking some outlandish color. Here's a cheap effect by selecting an oval on the wood, adding a dropshadow around the selection, then changing the color of the wood. To add the text, I added a text layer in white and set the layer mode to Overlay (I tried them all, and this came closest to what I wanted). I then duplicated the text layer since the overlay effect was too light.

Now, if the intention was to make it look like a wood sign on the building, I'd probably take a section of wood from elsewhere, so the boards didn't line up so well. Also, I'd probably play with other filters like etching the text. But, you get the idea. This is a really good way to make some hanging signs to attach to your buildings, or maybe to take some roofs and paint them up with advertisements on them.
