Anyone know if there is any chance of getting an updated Maiden that can be put together without inspiring an aneurism?

I'm not new to paper terrain and model making, BUT this has been one of the most frustrating models I have ever done.
I finally got the bow (mostly) right (it still gaps wide) and now the main body walls are bowed out. Horribly. I hard mounted the hull on MDF to negate warpage and that didn't make a difference.

I made sure that the 'tabs' lined up and it's still screwed up. Not impressed.

That's odd. I never finished mine, but I got the majority of it built, and definitely got the parts you're talking about built. It took awhile, but it wasn't bad. I even used regular Elmers glue, which is apparently a big no no and causes people lots of warp-age. However, I've never had an issue with it.

What kind of glue are you using? Have you thought about pressing the pieces under books as the glue dries, see if you can get it to dry straight?

I have been using a low water content glue from Scotch and a hot glue gun (when recommended in the instructions). Looks like the only real saving grace is going to be the Support Beams as I'm using them to pull the sides back into a semblance of acceptable. I've also been pressing and trying to keep everything online.

We'll see how it turns out.

My guess would be scaling issues, as well.

I have built two Maidens and have not seen the issue you mention first hand.

Nice to see a frustrating situation used creatively.

General tip for making the Maiden if you're worried about any bowing or 'warpage' of the hull:
When installing the left and right hull sides (Page 12) , do NOT do this in order as given on the PDF.

Instead, drop down to page 17 and install the rear hull wall first (make sure that the back is even by looking at it directly from the rear.

Then it is time to install the hull sides: go back to page 12: DO NOT connect the three pieces of hull sides together. Assemble and put on the ratline ledges on the individual pieces and then install the front and aft (rear) hull sides to their proper positions on the base and front/aft connecting areas. THEN install the middle piece of the hull side.

The advantage of this is that if you glue them together as a solid piece and are off by 1 mm +, it will bow or appear warped. By using this method, the middle wall piece can be allowed to 'cover up' or extend if needed in order to make the wall straight and true. If you came up 'short' on the printing or cutting, any white areas can be covered up by felt marker or by cutting a thin strip of left over cardstock and paining it brass or bronze (or what have you). By putting this over the 'mistake' you make it look like banding or additional support and can actually improve the look of the model for minimal work.

Oh, extra side note: If at all possible, attach the base (IE: lower deck) to a hard surface like 1/2" - 3/4" MDF. that way there is no way the bottom deck can warp and affect the rest of the model. Foam board can and will warp.



And this Maiden is going to be so over the top, it's not funny. oh wait. Yes it is...

Dude, I like how you made lemonade when you encountered the problems. Sometimes I feel pretty much the same way. First time there are always little tings that don't go according to plans. Like how you fixed them. Great job, and thanks for the advice, I still haven't put my Maiden together. Been waiting for the right time. My players now have a base in a small port city and, well, we shall see. By the way, how long does it take to put that bad girl together? Just asking.

Sorry I missed this thread when it was first started. Been busy with the holidays. I had the same problems with bowing on the front hull and warping/bowing of the sides. I just ignore the front hull issue 'cuz it's not easily noticeable when you put the front main deck on. It's still there, but it's easy to ignore. For the side hull, though, all my issues started going away when I glued the interior braces on. If you glue them properly, they'll pull the sides in and stabilize them. If you do them TOO well (like I did at first) then they'll pull the sides in TOO much and you'll have trouble fitting the main deck in, though.

Love your alternate way to assemble the hull sides, though. I had the same sort of issues where they were all coming together just a little off and I could have fixed that if I'd glued them the way you suggest. My back hull doesn't fit together all that well with the sterncastle. It would have if I'd glued on the rear hull pieces first and just let some of the side hull pieces overlap a little more to accommodate that.

My build time on this is going to be waaaay off due to what I'm doing to modify the model. That said, the base model is done already and has been for a day or so. So: call it a week of back and forth working on it (as well as college and new years).

The Stern is another issue in making sure it is JUST right. Mine does have a small gappage on the left rear, even though the bottom tabs are positioned correctly


The modifications to it are... well, let's just say I don't believe I've seen the Maiden like this before. Ever. According to my daughter it's gonna be S.P.A.S.-tacular
