The sad reality is that every model of every brand of printer can give you totally different results or present totally different challenges/problems. The best suggestion that folks here have given is to find an office products store (Best Buy/OfficeMax/OfficeDepot/Staples in the US) that has a bunch of printers on display and put a few WWG PDF files onto a USB thumb drive. Bring it and a handful of cardstock with you to that store and try to see if you can just plug the USB drive into a printer and print off a sheet or two on the cardstock to see how well it prints. Not all printers have USB ports like that, but it helps to see some samples. At the very least, most display models have some way to print out a demo sheet and you can use that as a test to see if it'll feed cardstock through ok. In some cases you might want to ask people there if it's okay to do that.

Keep in mind that everyone's opinions about what's good are different, too. I've tried the Brother 4040cn, which many on here love, but I think the quality is poor. So, personally, I'm sticking with my HP 6500 Inkjet. The quality just seems a lot better. The cost for ink is ridiculous, though, unless you buy a CIS.

The paper you use can make a big difference, too. I use HP Everyday Soft Gloss Photo Paper. My 2nd favorite to use is OfficeDepot Matte Brochure Paper. I find the Staples Matte Photo Paper that mproteau mentioned to be pretty good, too, but it's not my favorite. I've done numerous tests with different papers and different settings on my printer and documented each one for comparison. I keep intending to upload scans of them all online and post a link to them here so people can see the differences.

I will readily admit that I'm waaay too much of a perfectionist compared to most, though. So, take what I say with a grain of salt.

How do you get the stiffness required for models if you use photo paper? Are you printing on photo paper and then gluing it to cardstock?

I'm currently using 110lb cardstock from Staples. It's about $18 for a pack (not sure how many sheets... a stack about 2" thick). In Canada I believe Staples IS Office Depot; one bought the other a while back.

The photo paper I'm using is 200gsm thick. That's enough to keep it stiff enough when you do a sandwich fold for walls and such. It still helps to use the anti-warp walls, but it doesn't seem any worse than cardstock to me. I tried even thicker stuff (250gsm) but had problems when I scored it and folded it. The layers of paper would start to peel apart and the thickness was so high that it got really tough to get good, clean folds.

Any photo paper is going to be a lot more expensive than cardstock, though.

I believe that my last photo paper purchase was free after rebate, or at least close to it.

I LOVE printing on photo paper! I was also concerned at first about the thickness, but it has not been even a slight issue. Matte photo paper is what I will be printing on from here on out.
