I searched the forums using the search and couldn't find anything on this so I will post my questions here:

A) What printer is best for printing on card stock of at least 110 lb for paper models?
B) Does said printer have an available continuous ink system (that actually works)?
C) Is an expensive color laser printer my only option?

I really need a new printer and, as many of you already know, ink costs suck.

I punched in two of your search terms "printer" and "cis" and several of the top posts are mine, relating my experiences with my Canon MX870 printer (which I love) and the CIS system I use (which I love, too). I don't know how I could claim what the "best" printer is, but I needed an inexpensive printer that prints beautiful borderless photos, supported fax/scan/copy functionality and was wireless. Oh, and it had to print square (which not all printers do...) I picked up a CIS (see other posts) and experienced my share of user error, as they aren't fool proof (and I can be a fool!) but it's been GREAT for over a year now.

I use really cheap 110lb cardstock mostly, though the colors will bleed when printing on cardstock, so you have to play a bit to make sure printouts aren't too muddy. I picked up some matte photo paper and printed at photo quality, and it's so superior. I just don't know if I will like paying 3x for print material.

Back in the old days I owned a Canon Bubble Jet that I loved. It printed very sharp and never jammed. Since then I have bought two laser printers.

My first one was the Samsung CLP-610ND. So awesome and just beat my Cannon to the point I forgot about it (actually owned two Cannons). The thing could print five thousand pages before refilling the toner. The printer was terribly expensive to me, $450. The official cartridges were expensive too, about $400. I choked I think.

Then I discovered why E-bay was so popular. For about thirty bucks each I could get new cartridges, or, I could buy the toner and chips to refill them all myself. Since then have I bought my wife an HP Color Laserjet 1215 for about $125 online. It only prints about 2500 pages, but I still refill the cartridges and buy replacement cartridges for cheap.

In my opinion buying a laser printer is a no-brainer. I no longer have to refill my cartridges every few days, nor do I need to take out a loan to purchase them or the ink. I have never used the CIS system many people talk about, nor could I overcome the technical challenges I have heard many of them complain about. It sounds like it would make printing cheaper, but I no longer have to worry about moisture ruining my pieces. Anything I print is permanent. No more smudges because of the water soluble ink. And refilling is pretty simple if I can do so every year or two and still be able to print right after refilling.
